My spring snapped part # 77-3321 ..the problem is the bracket that it attaches to also snapped - I ordered a new spring but i guess the other piece has to be weilded .My question is what is the purpose of the spring'-my top now is much easier to put up - thanks

Nope.  It's not an uncommon problem.  I have a similar situation in my 250SL.  I don't know if you can weld the bracket, or better to replace.  Replacing is a big deal from what I understand.  The purpose of the spring is to make the raising of the top easier.   I put my top up/down maybe 3 times a year, and it's not an issue without the spring.   I would just live with it.

Thanks - doesnt seem like a big deal - and the top is much easier to put up without it

the purpose of the bow retention spring is to make putting the top up and down a bit easier (the rear piece anyway).  I have a 250 and 280SL with the bracket broken on both.  I have had a replacement piece welding on one, but had to fabricate the broken piece.  It works well, but is not necessary.  I have pictures somewhere if helpful.

Same problem here. Would it be possible for you to post the picture of your repair? Thanks.
