"Hot Cam" Euro Model?
« on: October 18, 2011, 14:19:45 »
Good Morning, I'm starting to refurburish my 230SL motor. It has this Cam.
#180-051-78-01
      AE 1
stamped at the other end, on the shaft is 26.6.64
On the larger end of the cam, stamped on the very end is 76
Can someone tell what they think this is?
Thanks

Hello Rocket,

Your first post, so welcome to the Group ! :D

Well, as to your question ... ???
I am not aware of the 180 051 78 01 cam.
I only know of the 180 051 76 01 cam (early M127II, 230 SL) and its today's replacement 180 051 84 01.
Also, I have not seen yet that there is anywhere a full "parts" number on the camshaft. Have mine out as well and will have a look at it the upcoming weekend.
But .. :D :D if you found already the "76" on the rear of the camshaft, this means you have a 180 051 76 01 cam, which is supported by your production date 26.6.64 (= 26 June 1964).
So, that's the correct cam for you. ;)

Best,

The 76 cam and its superseded part, the 84, cam both have the same timing specifications.

The only difference from what I can gather is cosmetic.
Both cams have solid shafts for external lubrication and differ with respect to the first bearing, where the 76 cam has an annular groove on the first bearing and the 84 cam has none.

I wouldn't be surprised if the quoted number 180 051 78 01 is actually 180 051 76 01 where the "6" appears to resemble an "8".
Just a thought...

Achim & Jaco van der Walt, Thank You very much for your imput.
I just came back in from the garage. (I couldn't stand it not knowing)
I used a magnifing lens with built in lite.
The full MB 10 didget part number is stamped onto the shaft of this cam, and suprising enough, it's crystal clear and well defined.
Both (8's) look exactly the same---108 051 78 01
Also if you rotate the cam shaft 180 degrees, directly across from the 108 051 78 01
                                                                                                   AE  1
is stamped into the cam??? What the heck does that stand for?
Again, thanks for your imput. It was just like a christmas present seeing that someone  heard me and wrote back.
Look forward to working with and supporting this group any way I can !!
Best wishes to you and your families
