Cam and valve timing specs.
« on: August 11, 2011, 01:38:13 »
I have searched all over the place to find the cam or valve timing specs ,that is the opening before top center and closing times after top dead center for the 09 cam shaft. Indeed, for any m130 cam.
If anyone could help with this I would be very grateful.
The reason I ask is that Daimler have no stocks of the 09 cam and are talking  of a 8 week delay . While they make one I guess.
My idea is get a 08 cam (easy to find anywhere) and get it reground to as close as possible specs ...for a lot less delay and/or money.  :)

Mirkwood,

Since nobody has answered you, maybe I can point you in the right direction at least.

I don't have specs you are looking for, but maybe you should contact some of the better known engine rebuilders that specialize in Mercedes engines.  I don't know of any in Oz, but here in the USA we have Noel's in Florida and Metric in California.  This may be something that they know, or can help you with.  Maybe they can even supply what you are looking for or point you to someone who can.

Might be worthwhile to watch the clock (so you call during their business hours) and call them rather than email--my suspicion is you'll get better information in a more timely fashion.

Hi Guys, We have a couple of really good cam grinders here in Australia (Waggotts and Tighes) remember the repco Brabham engines? Waggotts did the cams for those, plus many hundreds of other racer cams. Tighes can actually make me a cam from a billet so we are onto a winner now, although I will be aiming to regrind something closer to the 09 profile from a an 08 cam and I can use those specs to achieve this.

Again thanks for the great replies!! 8)

I have had a 08  cam reground to 09 specs, not a difficult job and fitted thicker pressure pieces to compensate for the smaller base circle diameter. I am just waiting for parts for another mecedes to clear some shop space and the complete engine will be installed .It will interesting to  see how it performs now against the old engine .

The camshafts are case hardened (nitrite hardened) from the factory. Are you re-hardening the cams after grinding?

Yes, it was all included in the cost . The engine is running rather sweetly according to the OWner. It's due in on Thursday for a check over and i'll report on progress. :)

I used a 230Sl cam with an offset wooduff key which gave me very similar timing to the 08 cam.

i spoke with the owner on Saturday and he is very very happy with his 280SL now. He says it has tons of power and torque and is quiet .
So the next project has just arrived and it's a 250..a new thread i thinjk.

In that same engine/type group, the #11 cam may be a better regrinding choice since its timing figures are between the 08 and 09 - means less metal removed, larger base circle remains etc.
