Ohio Plate "PAGODA"
« on: October 21, 2010, 22:23:56 »
To you Ohio members, come April (or maybe May, depending on how the Ohio BMV handles it) of 2011, the personal plate "PAGODA" will be available. I have moved out of state, and will not register it again. I don't know when it will show up, as my registration is paid to April 2011.

Unfortunately, PAGODA is not available in California, but I think I got a reasonable alternative... will share later, when I actually have the plate in hand.
Good Luck!

I purchased a 1969  - 1970 license plate.  Once I received it I sent it off to the  Florida DMV to have it authenticated.

Just to update - I got my California plate today - PAGODA 1.
Not on the car yet, still have to brave the lines at the DMV, but closer.

Remember, those in Ohio, PAGODA will be available after April, which the expiration month.

Hi Jonny,

I just went to the Ohio BMV and asked for PAGODA they said it was renewed for another year.  So I went with PAGODA1.  Do you still have the PAGODA plate?

Most interesting. I got the note for renewal, but just tossed it, so it was not me, and there have been no (not as of yet anyway) oddball charges on my credit card! The expiration date was April, but perhaps there is a waiting period??

Hi Jonny,

I stop at the BMV to ask them about a waiting period.  They said that once you get a personalized plate, it is yours to use for 13 months after the expiration date, then someone can use the plate.  Even if you are not renewing the tags, you still own the plate for 13 months after it expires.   So I'll have to wait until next May.

Thanks,
Alex

Is it not possible for the owner to transfer ownership of the plate to someone else.  If it was on a car that was sold then it would transfer with the car?? Does all over Australia and most parts of the world.

Garry:
In Calif the plates stay with the car with the exception, I believe, of personalized plates.  Someone from Cal can confirm.
However, in a lot of states, the plates are considered the property of the vehicle owner and they keep them when they change cars.

Last year I finally registered my 14,000 mile 71' 280 SL.  Once I received a generic CT vintage plate, I applied for a "Vanity" plate.  My first choice was PAGODA. To my surprise, it was available and now resides on the rear of my little tobacco brown 113.

Rick,

That is what I thought as a specialised plate that they are owned by the owner and therefor should be able to be sold on?

In Ontario, all licence plates stay with their owner. If a car is registered to more than 1 person, then the plate could belong to either/any of the owners. Sell the car, keep the plate. In principle, you keep your plate for life. You can order new metal if yours gets beat up, but you get the same alphanumeric combination. Since 1973, we've been through all the letter-letter-letter-digit-digit-digit combinations and then all the DDD-LLL combinations and for about the last 15 years we've been working on LLLL-DDD. We're part way through the B's now. In practice, most folks just get a new combination when they buy a new car and abandon the combination from the previous car.

Vanity plates are usually more carefully looked after, of course. Originally you could only choose 6 characters, but it was expanded to 8 about 10 years ago. You are permitted to buy a vanity combination and then gift it to someone. Then it's up to them whether to put the plate on a car or just nail it to the garage wall. I'm not sure if you can transfer a vanity combination after you've used it when you leave the province, as in Jonny B's case.

Marcus has "PAGODE" because PAGODA is taken by someone we don't know. I asked for 230SL but it was also taken so I settled on "D 230SL." I figured something involving "113" would be nice in this community, but folks on the street wouldn't get the reference.

A fun thread... make a gallery of our plates?

One of my customers has 280SL. He paid A LOT of money for it! I thin he should have spent that money with me instead!

I am new to California, but from what I have read (in my pursuit of plates) is that the plate stays with the car, with the exception of personalized plates. However, if you want to change personalized plates and get something else, the information states that you need to turn in the old plate to get the new one. In other states, I have been able to keep the old plate when or if I got a different personalized plate, and those old plates now reside on my garage wall.

A number of car adds on ebay you will see a California car advertised as having 'original black plates', or 'original blue plates' to indicate a long string of ownership or some claim at originality.

BTW - my SLK has "VN8E PL8" and a very good friend of mine in Ohio has "VANITY"

Hi Guys,

Johnny B, I just registered my 70 Dark Olive 280SL and got your Ohio PAGODA Plate 1/25/13.  Sorry Alex.  Couldn't believe it was still out there.  Joe A. is going to help me with it.
