a quick question for F.I. pump wizards
« on: September 03, 2010, 22:55:00 »

I now have a late 1971  M130.980 engine  in my '66 Pagoda.  The starting solenoid on the newer engine only has one connection terminal, but my 230SL has a two wire harness for this device.

Should I replace the later model solenoid (-016)  with my old engines two wire unit (-009)? Can I get in trouble by doing this?

Do the -016 series solenoids ground internally? Can I just jumper the other wire to chassis ground?

Is the power wire the black or the yellow (orange?)?     I cannot find it on the wiring diagrams.

Do NOT connect any wires from the 230sl's harness to the 70 280se injection pump. Just tape them off.

On the original pump the solenoid was a fuel enrichment for starting assistance. The solenoid on the 280se pump does exactly the opposite!! It is a fuel shut off.
by connecting the wire (BTW the solenoid is internally grounded) to the solenoid; as the motor is being cranked over it would pull the rack to the full lean position instead of the full rich that the 230sl pump needed to start. Most likely you would not be able to get the motor to start at all.

For clarity:
Are you referring to the cold start solenoid valve on the inlet manifold or the solenoid valve(s) on the injection pump?

I kind of think he's talking about the one on the IP.
I always thought that only IP's with two solenoids have fuel shut off - in this case the bottom one. The top one is a start enrichment device, correct?
