beauty rings

My beauty rings have road/curb rash on them and I would like to replace them.  I priced out new 230 sl rings at $139.00 each.  I have found other beauty rings on e- bay for about $20.00 each.  They sell all different diameters and appear to Look identical to the originals will those fit on the original 230 sl rims?

Those inexpensive beauty rings have a flatter cross section than the MB originals. I have put them on cars and the chrome was very thin and started to rust after a year or so. You get what you pay for.

I can look to see if I have four good old rings, if you are interested.

I have purchased these Ebay 380199972580 as a set of four.  Hard to beat the price.  Yes, they are slightly different from original, but nothing you would notice without specifically looking for it.  And, yes, they are thin, but once on, who cares?  Have no idea about rust.  My cars almost never see water by rain or hose.

FYI, part number 113 401 04 45, current MB USA list is $164, my price $120.59. Prices went up on many parts as of 1/1/2010.

Aren't the tech forums supposed to be for tech info and not a place for people to advertise their wares; prices, part numbers, and all....
If people want to sell things to someone who is looking for a part by all means contact them privately and help them out or ask them to contact you.

The forum is for information exchange.  Dave is providing information on all aspects of the 113s, including part numbers, pricing, etc.
I think its nice....

Yes, Bob you are right.

This issue just came up here, with me, and Dave got involved.  And yes, the forum is for exchange of information.  And while yes, the restorer could dig through his on-line MB link and maybe find the information himself, some of this stuff comes naturally to certain people, Dave Gallon among them.  He could rattle off the part number before the restorer established the MB link and logged on.

A relatively new member of the MBCA (don't yet know if he has shown up here or introduced himself) has a 1966 230SL undergoing a fairly thorough restoration at a local shop, Motorwerks.  It sits alongside TWO other 230SL's in various degrees of disassembly all meeting the same fate: they will be brought to life again.

I was called in to the shop to help evaluate some of the direction they are taking.  The issue of wheel covers and the beauty rings came up.  Replace (if available), or repair and rechrome?  (n.b. was only one of a myriad of topics we covered that day).  The owner's goal is perfection.  You cannot make the decision on how to proceed without knowing if the parts are available; you can't make the decision financially unless you know the cost.  The next step would be having a plater evaluate the wheel covers and beauty rings, to see if the dents and dings and scrapes of 44 years of abuse can be repaired prior to replating.

If the parts were not available, repair would be the most likely option.

Information flow, and friendly dialog and exchange is what keeps all this going and why these 3 sad 230SL's will all be driving and looking pretty darn smart later this year. ;)

I agree. I think having Dave offer some hard numbers when a part question comes up is great. He generally responds with info rather than advertises his goods. There is a difference.

Oh and by the way, I once replaced a beauty ring with a knock-off from Star Quality (dates me a bit) but it was something like 14 dollars then. I defy anyone (but you total nuts) to figure out which one it is...
