Coil for 71 280SL

I have a 1971 280SL with the original coil.  I want to replace the coil before it fails.  The original part number stamped by Bosch on the bottom is 0.221.102.050.  It has a reddish brown top with the numbers 1 (neg)  and 15 (pos)  on the terminals.   I have spent many hours trying to figure out the correct replacement for this coil.  No luck.  The forums have been generally helpful but I really could use the help of the members in figuring this out.  Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Your present coil should have a blue housing.

The replacement will be aluminum housing with yellow labels.
Bosch # 0 221 122 001 (MB 000 158 2803)

Current Bosch DB shows Bosch Part #00027 or #0221122010

That Bosch # should finish in 001

Do you happen to know what the difference is between the two? Every Bosch document I pull up references the 010 part #.

Hi, Rick,

It seems 010 is an earlier Bosch #.

Bosch do not list it anymore as a current number but other manufacturers (like Beru and Bremi) offer the same coil for both numbers, so I guess both are correct if 010 (NOS ?) is still available.

From what I see I'll bet you're right. I might place a call to Bosch tech support just for fun.

Thanks to you and Naj for all the help.  Let me know what the Bosch people tell you; I need to go down to my parts guy today to buy a coil so I can get my car up and running tmrw.

OK, I just got off the phone with a Bosch tech who checked the current DB in Germany.
The 010 coil has been superseded back to 001.

He mentioned that the coils are interchangeable but that the current listing shows the 001 number as being correct.

So, as Naj suggested, that's what you should go for.....and me, when ready  :)

(It always pays to double and triple check!)

Hi, Joe,

001 is a replacement for the 'blue coil' for transistorised ign systems.
Two ballast resistors are used AFAIK.

0.4 (blue band) and 0.6 (silver band)
