Looking at a nice 5speed as a car for our live in grand daughter who is going to a  local community college and has part time job.  Car appears to be in great shape, but I don't know alot about the model.  Anyone familiar with a similar forum as Pagoda SL Group?  Going to see it tomorrow.

Theses ones are from an era when MB really built good cars.
There are still many on UK roads and still sought after by many compared to its younger siblings.
Find a good well cared for one and it will serve you well.

Finding one that has not been a "cheap old car" is getting tougher. In the UK, good ones are really hard to find as they have been through the mill of boy racer mods or salty roads or both. My mum's is the latter..... but it drives really solid.

My experience with these has been generally positive....as Tosh states they were quite well built, but I would avoid the 2.6 versions as the six is really crammed in there....the car was designed for a 4 cyl. and the sixes required shoehorning them in and shoving the rad under the front framing making rad removal a royal pain and water pumps were mounted on the side and darn near impossible to remove with out pulling the manifolds...they also had head gasket problems that the 4's were less prone to. Sure they were quicker but that's not a good thing for a young driver....the 1.9 diesels were the best especially with the 5 speed...40-45 mpg. (cdn.)

I've worked on the 16 valve cars a bit. I did an engine for a guy a few years ago. The car came in running on 2 cylinders. The parts were god awful exspensive but what a nice little car to drive.
This one was an auto. I drove some 5 speeds but the auto drives better. At 60 MPH if you pulled out to pass it would shift down a gear and pull really hard. Beautiful power band matched perfectly to the auto trans. Most small 4 cylinder cars seem under powered and rev like crazy under full throttle but this thing felt more like a six cylinder. Definately more car than I'm able to drive fast.

I agree about the 2.6   I was able to remove the water pump but it was very difficult. I have a 5 speed trans (  4 cylinder car ) from one of these cars if anyone ever needs or wants one.

Hello,

They made another rare version with the 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine in it.  They were very quick for a diesel and still got good mileage.

Yes, the regular four cylinder diesel, with a stick (five speeds were available) made a great little car which goot as good or better fuel mileage than today's expensive hybreds.

Even the gasoline  four cylinders gave excellent mileage.

These cars were also known for their excellent handling.

Saw this post for the first time today... sorry.  We are still looking, but with four feet of snow on the ground here we're thinking Jeep or Suburu Forrester now.
