What is the last thing you bought for your Pagoda?
« on: September 06, 2009, 15:35:53 »
Share with the world what the last thing is that you managed to buy / find/ get for your Pagoda! Show off how lucky you were, tell the story of how you found it, and what condition it is in. Add a picture! You know, you may even help a fellow Pagoda SL Group member find a similar item...

I managed to get original plastic Hella covers for my Classic Chrome 160 driving lamps. Although Hella still makes those, and you can order them from a number of places, they stopped producing the plastic protective covers for them. I tried ordering them from the place I got the lamps from, but he couldn't get them anymore.

The size is important and it needs to be an exact fit, as the plastic is just held to the lamp by snapping onto it.

So I started monitoring ebay, and after a while an expert in classic Italian car-accessories had a set for sale. Turns out he is also based in Holland and we did a deal. I haven't seen them since on ebay, so lucky me!  ;D

I just purchased white wall cleaner from Coker.  The Westley's just wasn't doing a good job.  I'll find out today or tomorrow if it works better and and will post the results.

Dan, "The Benz Doctor" (bless his heart) suppplied me with "all " the parts, new and/or used, I needed to complete my restoration wich is now completed (?!)
His prices where reasonable and the free advise that came with it was greatly appreciated.

On another subject, The same thing that happened to PETER EGAN of ROAD AND TRACK fame just happened to me. If you recall he installed brand new weather stripping for the trunk of his Lotus and it would not close. He gave up after houres of trying, went to the Home Depot and made due with some domestic weather stripping.
After I installed brand new weather stripping in the doors of my Pagoda.......you guessed it, they would not close. It seems that the rubber chunks closes to the hinges would not compress enough to allow the door to close. I also wasted houres trying to make it work......finally removed the ofending portion and it works fine now.
Before I will make the trip to the Home Depot I would love to get some input from my fellow members on this site.....PLEASE !

I'm in the process of replacing the coolant lines, hoses, pipes...

It all started when I was flushing the coolant the other day.
A few days before I had found someone a few miles away unloading 113 parts for a nice price since he was moving to Stuttgart that week.  One of the items I got from him was a meter of MB 18mm hose.  So after I flushed the coolant a few times I put my newly acquired hose to work.
Well after that I thought I would take the expansion tank off and clean it up a little inside and out.
One thing led to another and I decided to just replace all the pipes and hoses since it has never been done before.

I also picked up most of the fuel hoses with the fittings from the guy, so I suppose that is next on the list.

The last thing i bought for my pagoda was a wood set - reconditioned it looks great, the only problem is the front trim which sits over the speed dials etc is broken and its for a left hand drive vehicle and mines right hand drive!

I was soooooo annoyed with Bud Benz where i bought it from as they had detailed instruction of the car and that it was a right hand drive vehicle. They did offer a refund if i sent the item back to them but they know how much it costs to send from london to usa and I would then have to claim the VAT, headache! so i'm left with a broken (can be fixed) front wood kit for a left hand drive pagoda if anyone is interested? It comes in two parts, one part is fine the other is snapped in two but once glued and held in place to set i'm sure it would be ok.

I just received an original copy of the Mercedes-Benz Roadster Top booklet for the 280SL (part number 113 584 18 96) to complete my glove box Owner's Packet.  I was made aware of the publication at PUB this year by Jonny Bernardi, who gave a wonderful talk and display about his MB literature collection.  He had a list of what publication were in the original glove box Owners Packet

I am pretty pleased with this one...

Back in 1998, when I had my car painted, the body shop repaired some rust in the cavities where the windshield wiper posts sit. They had me order new wiper post collars (if that's the right word). At the time (and since I think), the replacements were black plastic instead of the original chrome color. Anyway, I recently found an excellent set of used chrome ones to replace my black ones. 20 bucks each. Thanks Dave G.  Its a subtle but rewarding acquisition...

PS -- just looked and SLS seems to have both black and chrome ones... things were harder the locate back then, that for sure. And sorry about the lousy photo -- that's from my cell phone. We recently found that our digital doesn't bounce very well  :(

Mon-Star

As I am rapidly approaching the big 7-0 and ever mindfull of the possibilities of Alzheimer's I thought it would be usefull to have something to remind me where I keep my polish [McGuirers ofcourse] and chemises for the 280SL.
So when a friend gave me the Mon-Star pictured I knew just where the attach it.
Cal number plate is from the SL, the black and white is a spare off our R129 SL500

Last thing I got was the gas tank cap rubber seal, which reminds me I still need to mail that check to David Gallon!

My list is racking up though, I have to get a new power antenna as the one on the car just died three weeks ago, also need the Power Steering pump seals and a hub to install my new (to me) Nardi wheel.

Too bad I've been traveling non stop for the past 5 weeks almost, and still have 3 or 4 more weeks to go... summer is going to be over by the time I have some free time to drive around.  :'(

I got an e-mal from RockAuto,http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/racatalog.php, announcing a clearance on parts for our cars. I am not certain if I got a great price but, it seemed reasonable. I ordered:
Points
Plugs
Wires
Air Filter
Brake Pads
Rotors
Distributor Cap

Everything was correct except the distrutor cap. I only paid $4 for it and it did not seem that it is worth the postage to return it.

A set of Kim's excellent sunvisors to replace my very nice, but slightly sagging originals.  Slipped right onto the original pivot hinges with a flick of the wrist and look just grand.

At PUB, I bought a spare tire cover and a correct Becker Mexico.  Unfortunately when I went to install the radio, I discovered that the opening had been enlarged.  Fortunately, I was able to put the knobs on a newer Mexico that fit.

Now I have a winter project to install and paint a new radio plate.

The spare tire cover installed without problems, though.

About a month ago a found a set of chrome wiper blades on eBay to replace the black ones the PO installed.   They came from Cyprus of all places.  Installed, they look almost authentic.

Last thing I bought were the appropriate size, rub-strip and period-correct tread Vredestein tires. To replace my 205/14 Pirelli's. The Vredesteins look a lot better being less wide etc. But the ride is now also less firm as a result, although slightly more comfortable. All in all a good purchase.

Since I'll be installing rebuilt calipers as soon as they arrive, I bought today a set of SPEEDBLEEDERS.

Have used them on serveral vehicles over the years and as a one-man-show it is the simplist way I know to reliably bleed lines air free.  Open 1/4 turn, pump the pedal 4-5 times, close the bleeder, top-off reservior, repeat on 2nd-3rd-4th wheel, done.

$7 per wheel... best money I spent.

Cheers... Brian
