Vin number VS Engine Number
« on: June 27, 2009, 23:18:35 »
Hi all,

I am a new member and I expect to buy a 280 sl pagode in 2 days. I would like to know if I can know witch engine number should this vin number correspond?
W 113 044 120 22603

Is it possible to know what is the original engine number of this car?

I did not saw, yet, the engine number in the car.

Thanks

mmata

Hello mmata, welcome to the group!
Unfortunately the VIN and engine number are different and the VIN will not tell you what engine came with the car.
What you need is the "data card" for the car. The Technical Manual on this site here has all the information that you need to decipher the card: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/Start
If the seller does not have it get it from the Classic Center (it is free) before you buy the car and compare the engine, chassis, transmission, hard top numbers, the car colors, etc.  with the codes on the card!

To find the engine number, use a flashlight (torch) and shine the light a few inches below the 5th and 6th spark plugs.

It may be dirty and difficult to see.

Some Replacement engines do noy have a number...some older cars have the number on a small plate riveted to the engine...later cars have the number cut into the engine block.

Thanks for all the replies they were very helpfull. I have 2 days before I buy this pagode 280 sl from 71, so, I will post the pics when bought. I will also put the pics i have from my mercedes adenauer, ponton, and my 356 b.

Lets hope I will make a fair buy. This pagode needs some work but the price, (regarding i am in Portugal where cars are expensive), it is good.

Sorry my english.

Tom,

Can your centre provide data cards for non US delivered cars ie an Aussie?, or do we have to go to Germany?

We can generally get data cards no matter what country the car was exported to.
