Off topic: undercarriage/engine compartment color

Does anyone know the correct color of early 50's undercarriage and engine compartment.  Was it the body color?  I have a 52 220B Cabriolet I need to get to work on.  Bonus question:  Was the steering column always black regardless of body color?  Appreciate any help.
