? sticking ignition relay
« on: May 26, 2009, 05:09:58 »
My 1970 280sl continued to run today when I turned off my car and removed the key. This was not pre-ignition as it ran perfectly smoothly. It switched itself off after about one minute. This happened again later in the day. Is this caused by a sticking ignition relay and where is it situated? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Ohhhhh....... that's not good.
I don't think there's any kind of relay and it's all in the ignition switch. You need a new one because it should shut off every time. You will need to pull all the  gages to get at it.

Thanks for the news. I don't have the time or energy for that now. Just completed the rear axle rebuild. Sounds like a good winter project. Probably pull the whole dash, recover, refinish the wood and rebuild the rheostat at the same time.
