My distributor gear is not coming off with ease. I tried to tap it lightly with a rubber mallet, but it is still stuck at the shaft. I am afraid of damage anything, so I do not want to use a lot of force. Do I need to get myself a tool as shown in the attached picture?

How are you planning to get that puller into that small work area?

I used a puller with grip width 6-35mm, and it got a grip behind the gear. Very little force was needed to remove the gear. Both the woodruff key and sprocket came off with no problem.

Update: The engine is now diassembled. It is visible wear at the intermediate shaft and vertical shaft driving the oil pump and tach.
I have also taken out the pistons and crankshaft. The rod bearings and main bearings have survived, see pictures.
