Information

The Planning Committee for the 2017 PUB-Virginia is working hard in the background to put on a spectacular event for this September.

First, we want to thank Joe Alexander for hosting PUB for so many years. Joe is a teacher at heart and did a great job of laying the foundation for future PUB events away from Blacklick. We will lean heavily on this foundation as we plan events for September. Joe will lead several of our technical sessions and we look forward to his continued involvement in PUB.

Moving forward, a change in the venue from time-to-time provides an opportunity to take in social and cultural elements from the surrounding area. So think of PUB-Virginia as a mix of prior PUB events (technical sessions) as well as expanded social events that are so popular at our European Event.

The Greenwood, Virginia setting offers mountains, vineyards, craft breweries, historic sites, and scenic drives that should offer something for everyone. So in addition to the technical sessions, we will help organize outings to enjoy what Greenwood and Charlottesville has to offer. Greenwood is just 15 minutes via interstate 64 from Charlottesville, Virginia, home to the University of Virginia and Monticello-Thomas Jefferson’s Plantation home and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ramsay Farm in Greenwood is “PUB central” where all technical sessions will be held as well as several of our meals and social events. Ramsay is on the National Register of Historic Places and a brief write up of the property can be found on Wikipedia as Ramsay (Greenwood, Virginia) and in the Crozet Gazette. Pictures of the property can be found here. The structures on the property include an Estate House, Cottage, Farm House, Barn, Studio, Carriage House and several run in sheds for farm animals.

Most of our sessions will be conducted in the Barn and paddocks area of the farm. The Barn itself will be used for food preparation, and offers two modern bathrooms. We will have several tents much like what Joe provided in Ohio.

We will host an optional Cocktail Party for early arrivals on Friday night at the Estate House formal garden, followed by dinner under the stars at the barn. Saturday lunch will also be at the Barn.

Fees

So now let’s talk money. Our quick math suggests that the all-in cost to a participant is roughly the same as in 2015 when all meals are counted. 2015's PUB was a la carte, with General Admission and meals priced separately. Since the format has changed to provide both technical sessions and expanded social events, we’ve combined several meals with the General Admission. General Admission, Friday night meal, Saturday lunch and Saturday night meal are now combined in one charge of $150. If you arrive early on Friday, you are invited to the optional cocktail party at the Estate House for $25 per person. If you bring a spouse or significant other, the additional meals for your loved one can be purchased for an additional $75.

This year, we will use online registration for the event. The following link will take you to our EventBrite site that provides a summary of the program as well as ticket purchase. You can also download the app so that you can present your ticket for entry upon arrival. The site also allows for you to enter your departure ZIP for ride-sharing purposes and for those arriving by air, airport listings so we can try and match you up with other air travelers.

It gets better. If you came a long way and want more, we are organizing two scenic drives upon departure from PUB.

One will head south through the Blueridge Parkway with an overnight stop in Blowing Rock, NC continuing on the next day to Ashville NC (think Biltmore House).

The other drive heads north along the Skyline Drive national scenic route.

We did not have much leverage on rates. There is a University of Virginia home football game that weekend, and that time of year is apparently popular for weddings.
