Bob Smith: a couple of weeks ago I bought some new H4 bulbs 60/55W. Today I had a look at my reflectors. During my assessment I noticed that one of the reflectors has the small (NOT SO) reflective mirror in the focal point of the lens and one did not have it. My observation has been that both headlights are equally dull. MY QUESTION: do I need to worry about anything other than replace the bulbs?

Bob, are you talking about the half-round shield in front of the bulb, mounted on two legs that clip into the reflector? I think they are called bulb shields or anti-dazzle shields. When I installed halogens in my Euro lights, I removed the bulb shields because the new bulbs were a bit too long. However, the bulbs themselves had a dark shield on the front which seems to serve the same purpose as the bulb shields, no dazzle when I checked. I didn't change anything else, figured the wiring should handle the relatively small extra amperage that 55/60 watters would draw. New reflectors are available, one of mine was pretty bad so I replaced it.

Bob: The same ones. I think I will remove the remaining one. I noticed the reflective end on the bulbs. Before I replace my head light reflectors there is a spray-on chrome finish which I am going to try first. Additionally one of my fog light reflectors was very rusty so I took it out and cleaned it and treated it for the rust. This morning I painted it with the spray-on chrome finish. I then gave it another coat this afternoon. It looks pretty good but obviously not like new. It is summer here and about 28C and dry as a chip at the moment. I will re-assemble the unit just to have a look at how effective the spray-on is. Then decide what approach to take with the main headlight reflectors. If I was going to put in the 100W bulbs, then additional relays would be the order of the day, not necessary with the 60/55W units.

New reflectors and glass (about $100 per light) make a world of difference, especially with halogen bulbs, almost like a modern car!

Bob - new reflectors alone, HERE IN AUS, $136.36 EACH. It is a last choice option. My glass is clear and clean.This chrome spray is an experiment. I rarely drive my car at night and NEVER use the fog lamps. If they look shiny from the outside then they will do the job. I have had trouble buying the fog light bulbs. I will persist. Both the old ones have the filaments blown.

Bob, I got my new reflector from Van Dijk in The Netherlands. The old memory isn't what it used to be, but I'm pretty certain that 1 reflector plus shipping cost less than 45 USD. Took about 5 weeks to get to me.

Bosch make a bulb that sells for $25.00 each. Hella also make a fog light bulb replacement. It is D1245 and sells for $20.00 each. These bulbs have two different sized bayonets on them. I suppose that makes them expensive. I actually didn't buy them because I decided that as I didn't use the fog lights it would be wasting money. Lots of other things on the car that I can spend $40.00 on. I did the "spray chrome" on the reflector and I also painted the interior of the light fitting body with silver roof paint. It was already painted silver but was very dull and patchy, this just freshened it up. I think it helps with the light output at night too. From the outside with the glass dome installed, visually it looks a lot better. Regarding your lights.... Maybe a good clean of the terminals, which can become oxidized, would help. It might be the easiest thing to try first. Also it would be interesting to know if the bulbs are the same rating. I had one old 45/40W bulb and one H4 halogen 60/55W bulb.

Does anyone know for sure if USA headlight rings will fit on the EURO light?

Cees: on the US headlights on my car, the chrome rings and the plastic were not moulded together - the chrome came right off. In any case even if it is moulded, I would think you can take them apart. The chrome rings fit right onto the euro light assemblies, but you will have to grind out two small notches that are in the inside of the chrome rings. This takes two minutes with an appropriate smaller grinding tool in your power drill. The chrome rings cost around $200 for the pair, so it is worthwile to re-use your old ones. If the plastic is in good shape, you may want to sell them complete with chrome, though.
