The car sold for $30K.  It was a 4 speed manual, no mileage disclosed.  It was described as maintained but not restored.  Looked very nice to me.

Ahhh, the perfect Pagoda....almost!
- 280SL = Power
- 1969 = Minimal emissions and fuel economy add-ons
- 4-speed = Sporty driving experience

All it needs is to be a Euro version
- More power with the Euro cam.
- Better looking trim.

It will be interesting to see what it goes for.

Tom:

I'm confused. The BJ website shows Lot #464 as:

464  1971  PLYMOUTH 'CUDA COUPE

It also seems that this year's auction had no cars with a reserve and apparently this one has a reserve.

Was the link you posted below from this year's Scottsdale auction?

Perhaps that link was from 2002 Ed, if it does not match the 2006 catalog?  The link notes sold 2002BJ. And the photo doesn't load.
I have no idea which cars sold at BJ, but I did watch for about an hour or so a few years ago, and remember there being predominantly Corvettes and muscle cars like the Plymouth.

Ed, Chad -- Sorry for the confusion.  A good friend had forwared that link and I posted it assuming it was for 2006, but as Chad points out looks like it actually happened at the 2002 auction.

My error.  Good catch guys.

I attended Saturday's Barrett-Jackson Auction. Mostly American muscle cars, rods, vettes - not too much Euro stuff. Saw no Ferraris, a single Lamborghini. This year's magic word seemed to be 'Hemi' or 'Shelby' and the bidders would go nuts.

Benz-wise, there were several 300 sl's (coupes and roadsters), all buffed and restored within an inch of their lives. There was a 300sl coupe and roadster up for sale by the original owner. The coupe had a red body with white roof, which I had not seen before.

AMG had a large display near the main entrance, including one of their SLR/ Mclaren coupes. That models engine was also on a stand for all to see. Impressive.

Here's the BJ lot numbers for Saturday's 300sl's, if you're so inclined. I couldn't locate any 2006 end prices as of yet.

1299.1 -- 1956 300sl coupe
1310    -- 1956 300sl coupe
1286    -- 1957 300sl coupe
1308    -- 1959 300sl roadster
1285    -- 1963 300sl roadster
1272.1 -- 1999 300sl coupe replica

Interesting that I attended Thurday through Saturday and never saw the red #448 car. As mentioned it sold for $30,000. I did see the "restored" black '66 (#626) and in my humble opinion, it was fair at best...amber tail lights, later wheels, no headlight notches, etc. I tried to open the hood but it made such a racket that I closed it immediately as it felt like it was going to fall off [:0]. At $35,000, I would say that the owner got more than the car deserved.

Some thoughts: I understand that BJ Scottsdale auctioned approximately 1,080 cars in six days. 400 of which were Chevrolets. The buyers (5,000 registered bidders @ $350 each bidders fee) were American muscle car buyers in the largest part. As much as I loved the "show", I wouldnt ever bring my 113 there to sell. On the flip side, "rare" Corvettes, Chevelle's, Cuda's and Challengers were bringing the really BIG dollars (ie: 1969 low mile L88 'Vette $310,000). Plus ALL cars auctioned by BJ at this event are NO RESERVE so you have to take what the high bid ends up at or but the car back yourself. The seller fee AND the buyers fee that BJ takes is 8% on each side of the deal!

Highest priced vehicle??? A one of 12 produced 1950 GM "Futurama" bus-type vehicles used by the maker for shows and exibitions...$4 Million...go figure.

Kevin:

While I didn't make it this year, it is a very fun event to attend, even though it has become a little muscle car heavy. The Futurama Bus was way cool, I think of the original 12 built it is one of three left, at least in decent condition. Can you imagine driving that thing?

I watched on TV the red 280sl go across the block. If the seller had tidied up the engine bay it probably would have brought more but I really wasn't too surprised at the final number for it.

Wish I could have been there but it made for great TV on a very damp and foggy Atlanta winter weekend. I'm sure you enjoyed yourself. It is such a great car show and event.

Ed,

My brother is a muscle car fanatic owning 14 cars himself indluding a '66 Chevelle SS he purchased new, a '69 'Vette with 32k miles and a '62 Impala 409/409 with 53k miles.

Even though it is not particularly Euro friendly, if you are a "car guy" like most of us, this event is worth every penny to attend. You certainly have to appreciate all of the time and effort that has been spent on these restored and oft times better than new vehicles, There certainly is a "bond" one has with the likes of this group. In addition, every one from Carroll Shelby and Edsel Ford to Sammy Haggar, Alice Cooper and Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top were there in the crowd with cars for sale. Fantastic!

If you go next year let me know.

BTW, the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction takes place Mar 28th - April 1 about 30 minutes from my house  8) .

I have completely lost interest in Barrett-Jackson.  I drove those cars when they were brand new and IMHO they are way over-rated now - or should I say WAY OVER-RATED. Of course, Barrett-Jackson is just reflecting the market, and the market these days is in muscle cars.  The 113 doesn't fit in today's market.  There are buyers for 113s, but for the most part, you won't find them at auctions, even the auctions at Monterey.

A little off topic but it gives me great pride to read that RVMaster thinks that (my) european version 1969 280 Sl 4 speed is the "perfect pagoda". :D
