Steering Wheel Refurbisher/Restoration
« on: August 31, 2023, 16:12:55 »
Hi all, sorry if this has been discussed before - but I would like to have my original steering wheel restored. May be too far gone, but is there someone that does this?
Thanks!

Jim, you'll need to do a search here; there are a few places in the country that do such refurbishment which entails filling with epoxy and then painting. If you have no luck searching here, try doing a simple internet search, I'm sure a bunch will come up--

I think your wheel looks worse than it is. As Mike already said, there a quiet a few companies that will restore these wheels. I did mine myself. Its time consuming and probably not cheep. There are also a number of YouTube videos that show the process and how to do it.

One of our well known and trusted suppliers, Authentic Classics (a SPONSOR OF PAGODAFEST CHICAGO) just introduced a stock of new steering wheels within the past day or so, you can find them under the commercial advertising section. Once you get the cost and time of restoring a steering wheel you may decide that a replacement might make more sense. Most of the steering wheel restorations are eventually painted, and to me, painting is not as good as new plastic, but that's my opinion.

Mike,  His steering wheel is the early one.  The ones like his are over 2K new on authentic classics.

JimEast, You may be able to find a decent one that is used if yours is too rough to restore.

Maybe possible for a Nardi or other if the OEM is NLA or too costly, or refurbishment too costly or impossible.

Or put another leather wrap on it if structurally sound.

I can second steering wheel Bob. My ivory wheel on the W128 was in pretty good shape but I wanted to refresh it. He just did some minor work to make it look new instead of charging $$$ for a total restore. I like that kind of honesty. Seems more than capable of handling a big job.

 @JimEast,

Recommend to look for a better (used)s steering wheel for refurbishment,
yours already looks very poor due to larger cracks....

Just my 2 cents .....

If you did want to go ahead and respray it.. what would be the correct colour?
Any make or type of paint?
