Seatbelt hanger.
« on: August 15, 2023, 01:58:32 »
Does anyone know the secret to fitting these seatbelt hangers?  They were delivered with the car and in place covering the seatbelt attachment at the top of the B pillar.  The Kangol neatly clipped on the bottom slot (when not in use) while the top part covered the metal plate and bolt.

I’ve tried my best to slide them over the metal piece to no avail.  The slide on about 3/4 but fail to slide on completely and seat securely.  They eventually just fall off.

Hi Len,
Will you be at Pagodafest Chicago?
If so, I can show you then, because I'm not sure what issue you are having.
Mine slide on and are secure.
This might be the key. When I first installed them, the hooking "loop" was pointed down, and everytime my seatbelt got pulled tight, the plastic part would pop off.
Then I mounted it with the hooking loop pointed up, and now it works just fine and stays in place.
Good luck !

Thanks for the suggestion, Mark.  I think you’re onto what the problem has always been. I didn’t even know the car had these hangers until the seats were removed to install the new carpets!  I’m reasonably sure my dad experienced the same issues with them popping off since his top bracket always faced downward.  Actually the belt functions better when rotated to the up position.

I’m also going to heat the plastic hanger in hot water to try to facilitate it slipping over the bracket and locking in place.

Regrettably, I won’t be able to attend PagodaFest Chicago.  I had planned on going but with my dads passing, settling his affairs is taking up all my time.

Finally got it in place.  Followed Mark’s (Iconic) suggestion plus heated the plastic so it was more pliable. With the hanger piece facing upward, the bracket snapped on easily.  I then rotated in the downward position to clip on the end of the buckle. Makes for a very tidy appearance.

Hi Len, can I ask if your seat belt hangers are for a 2 or 3 point seat belts. I have 3 point Kangol belts and would love somewhere to hang them

I have the 3 point static Kangol (model LD3).  The lap version(2 point) lacks an attachment point on the B pillar so this wouldn’t work.

Early versions of these three points, have a chrome adjuster than also functions as a hanger.  I believe Ralph Neely has pictured his someplace on the forum.

Len,
Just an FYI, if I left it in the position you show, and pull on my belt, the plastic part would pop off.
I have mine oriented with the loop up (180 degrees rotated from your picture) and now it doesn't pop off.
My condolences on the loss of your father.
Take care,
Mark

Hi Len, thanks for enlightening me, mine do have the metal buckles and I can now hang the buckles out of the way.
Nice thing about this group is there is always something to lean and someone always has the answer.

Len, I think this is the post you refer to.  This was as delivered in Feb 1969. Chassis 007749.

Thanks Ralph for including the link!

To Davek1’s point: I joined this group in mid 2019 as a complete novice knowing little to nothing about w113s.  Through this forum and countless members who were willing to give selflessly of their time and knowledge, I’ve learned a great deal and I’m still learning more each time I log on.   To those who say that membership is well worth the fee, I say, “Right on!”

Based on what I’m reading and seeing the seatbelt should not go through the plastic gap where the seatbelt is supposed to clip on is that correct? Would it just then go over the top? Seems like it might pull down and pop the plastic cap off.  Haven’t tried it that way yet. Just wanted to see which is correct.

When I drive I rotate the plastic piece 180° from the photo, so the belt is higher going over the shoulder.

The purpose of the cover is two fold: to conceal the attachment hardware at the B pillar and to hang the clip section of the buckle when not in use.  It would be difficult, if not impossible, to hang the clip section of the buckle with the belt fed through it.

Truth be told, Kangols are rather funky belts and lack the convenience of modern retractable ones.  They function perfectly fine but keeping them clear from doors and sills is an issue.   The hanger helps do that.
