Right side mirror...quality of repro?
« on: June 26, 2019, 18:10:17 »
SInce I can't reply to an old thread, thought I'd start a new one.

In the market for one.

Seen the repro:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Exterior-Mirror-Right-Late-for-Mercedes-Benz-Pagode-W113/153251441243?hash=item23ae7f6a5b%3Ag%3A3G0AAOSwIbtb4qsH&LH_ItemCondition=3

And new:  https://www.authenticclassics.com/Mercedes-250SL-280SL-Right-Door-Mirror-p/auth-003057.htm

Quite a big diff in price.  Has anyone purchased the repro and can attest to its quality (or lack thereof)?  If it's good, sure, why not.  If it's a POS, then I guess I'll shell out the money for MB.

I have bought both, a pair of repros and a pair of genuine MB mirrors. Genuine mirrors came with convex mirrors installed. No need to buy them separately (which I didn´t know...).
Quality of repro mirror is ok. Though genuine MB mirror has better quality. You can feel it.

So here is a question....
did the 250SL come originally with a right hand door mirror?  Mine was a German delivery and it does not have a right hand mirror.

I believe the RH mirror on a LHD car was an option and vis versa for RHS cars.  It will be on the data card if installed at production.

Go with the factory ones.
Had an aftermarket one and a friend bumped into it and snapped off at the midpoint of the gooseneck.
No good.
Originals don't snap off like that, I've tried.
Also make sure you get the base metal plate that fits under the door skin to provide a flat bearing surface for the two 10mm nuts and washers.  Without the plate, the aluminum skin of the door will create two tents and distort where the washers bear onto the skin.
I've seen the tents and they are terrible to fix, plus the mirror gets loose.

Thanks.  I don't think they sell the metal plate anymore.  I was planning on just getting a steel plate, drill some holes for the mirror, and jb weld it to inside of the skin.  Original plate I think was spot welded on.
