First row:
491 - US version
503 - left side outside/door mirror

Second row:
423H 423H 6 - tobacco brown body, tobacco brown hardtop (H= Herberts = paint supplier), 6 = hardtop and softtop, hardtop mounted

Third row:
113044 10 7     means 113044 10 = 280 SL LHD stick shift, 7 = American Continent delivery

Forth row:
60509    83672  means  60509 = production number, 83672 = body number.

I thought the 10 in the third row meant euro version.

I appreciate your assistance. Thank you very much.

Tobacco brown? The car is grey, I was under the impression it is original paint.

What do production-number and body-number indicate? There is no relation to the chassis-number, obviously.
If one had chassis-number 113 044 10 010599, wouldn't that mean it is the 10599th 280SL to roll off the line?

If I looked at an aluminum body tag with holes in it from corrosion I would be very careful inspecting it for rust.

I assume Production number is an overall Mercedes paperwork designation across models.  Body number identifies the body after manufacture until it is assigned a chassis number.  I assume the raw bodies may go as far a paint before the frame rail is stamped with the Chassis number which would explain the various parts that are painted off the car are stamped with the body number.
