W111 stacked headlights wiring
« on: July 13, 2018, 16:20:11 »
So I am helping a friend with his 1970 W111 3.5 coupe he says it is a Euro but it came with stacked headlights.  The wiring diagram has no colors on it and the car was butchered by a PO so we do not know what is stock and what is "fixed" I think these are the headlight holders but he has a box of 10 different styles ones .  MY question is A. what is this black lead that comes from wiring harness with the screw on holder?  Then B. can someone tell me the colors on both sides of this multi-pin connector?  The multi-pin should be for fog lights and turn signal?  Or is his turn signal suppose to be the 2 round lights next to the low grill (we haven't even started on those yet, just have holes in panel and another box of clear and amber lights).  Thanks in advance Bob

These look to be the late Halogen version of the stacked headlights. Take gander at this post where much of this was discussed. https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27408.0

I will also see if I have pictures from when I was considering using these. It has all of the functions within the headlights - turn signal, standing light, parking light and obviously high beam. Some of the pictures I have show the wiring and maybe that would help.

Hi,

The black wire with the screw on holder connects to the additional foglights,  either from Hella or Bosch depending on the year.
The seperate halogen foglights came as a standard part of the optional stacked headlights H1 version.

The halogen stacked headlighs came standard on all Euro 6.3s.

Here is what I would do. Google W111 Euro stacked headlights. Many on eBay show the wiring on the back like this one.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-W111-W112-W109-W108-220-HEAD-LIGHT-LAMP-Headlight-Bezel-Chrome-/302804321540 This one has issues, but you get the idea. If you can find another couple, you should be good to go.

Did you look at the thread I mentioned below? It outlines what the functions of the lights. It refers to M100 website because some of the cars had these.  http://www.m-100.co/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5041&whichpage=1&SearchTerms=City+light They tell and show what the lighting functions are.

So knowing that, You should be able to determine what wire from the harness powers what function and match that to the wire going to the correct light. Again, use the eBay pictures to help guide you. It will take some research unless someone has this and can do a wire schematic.

Keep in mind, this is only for the Euro halogen stacked light, NOT the sealed beam US stacked headlight. That is a different beast.

Bob, I am probably not helping here, but knowing the functions of the light spots, you can probably work out the wires in the connector with multimeter, or tell what they are supposed to be.

If you have /8 BBB (108 109 111 113 for 1966-1973) the wiring diagrams there for 280SE/9 3.5, 280SEL/9 3.5 and 300SEL/9 3.5 have colours of the wires marked.

Click on the link in the green warning box. You may find the intended layout of the connector of the light. Do read the text in the green warning box!
