Original Beru clamps for engine bay
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:08:58 »
Hi guys,

I am new to this forum since i have just purchased a 1965 230SL in nice condition (and with an interesting history file). Some small parts are not original, as clamps for the rubber hoses in the engine bay.
As far as i've been able to see in the manuals here on the forum, these clamps were originally made by Beru. Is this correct, and where could i possibly find the similar ones at a reasonable price?

Thankful for any help.

Best regards
Pär Pettersson

Hello Pär,
There are a few different types of clamp so you'll need to post photos of the specific hoses.

Hi Pär,

I had the same dilemma a couple years ago.  I went to several auto salvage yards and harvested all the clamps I could from donor cars.  Generally, the cars change but the clamps don't.

it might be useful reading the discussion here:

and also what is in the Technical Manual: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Engine/HosesClamps

Many thanks! I will look into this as soon as the car arrives - hopefully within a week or two! :)

Your 230SL used mostly Norma non adjustable clamps for the rubber hoses.  I have all the sizes except for the Air intake hose which is NLA. The clamps used on the vacuum hose weer 5mm beru.  I have these also.  Email me off line at w113sl@aol.com

Hi Pete,
isn't the clamp shown in this photo also a Beru clamp?

Installation of the clip is shown here:

Interesting picture. I have not seen that style of boot on the 100 degree switch. I have a couple of those style clamps on my 280 SL (power steering hose now) and have seen them for the water hoses. I know of no source for these. I have had a couple of discussions with Dave Gallon about the clamps used for the 113, and there are a number of varying sources, that is pictures that show the cotter key style on the heater hoses to the heater core at the firewall, and others that show the Beru style. I think it is possible to "discuss" this at quite length and for both parties to be accurate.

Jonny--Alfred's post of that picture sure looks like a drawing to me, not a photograph. Could be some artistic interpretation involved?

Michael,
MB manuals used mostly photographs, and this is a photo also.
In the scanned copy it just appears like it might be a drawing. In addition there are photos of original cars with that clamp in that location. Send Dave G. a note if you want to know more.

Alfred:  This clamp as shown in the picture might be Beru, but they are NLA.  I have seached for these and the Gemi clqmps used on 280SL's to no avail.  The Norma claps were used early postwar years untli 1967.  Then the gemi with philips head screws took over.

Here are some of the versions. The special clamp at the lower right is very hard to find. It was used in only a couple of places on the W113 engine. Who knows where?

Some of the screw clamps are the later Norma style which appeared after the era.  Notice that these "Norma" style screw clamps do not have slots cut all the way through the threads on the bands.  This prevents damage to the hose as happens on the SAE style hose clamps.

Study the pictrue to see how the banding is routed during original installation.

The S-9 clamp (in previous discussion) was used for years on differential boot clamps, long after it disappeared from the engine bays. Scavengers can collect these relics from "donor cars"  and then can have the NA buckle replated and install new strapping which is available still. Silver Zinc plate is correct.

I notice that plastic ratchet straps are visible in 49er's picture. I didn't think they'd been invented then but when I looked here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_tie
I see that they were invented in 1958.

Joe A - clamp in the lower right of the picture - I have one still in place on the power steering hose for the 280 SL.
