Hardtop fittings.. some questions
« on: April 30, 2011, 17:57:24 »
Gents, good evening

Currently restoring my hardtop and what joy it was cleaning off all the old sealant... The roof rails have thrown me a little so I'm hoping someone can help.  On the attached picture showing the hardtop components there are references to plastic clips and tensioning sleeves (number 110 and 111) but I have no idea what they are for..  When the top was disassembled I can't actually remember seeing these clips.

Can someone throw any light on these items please?  Also, there is mention of a sealing strip.  Is this used for sealing the chrome components to the hardtop?  If not, what do you use?

Thanks everyone in advance.

Terry

Peter, danke!

That explains my confusion... I have the old brass fittings for my rails and so I couldn't understand where the plastic clips fitted in..

Much obliged for the help Peter, it's appreciated.

Terry,
You mentioned the chrome brass strips.
You have several small flush head phillips screws that fasten to the rails through the metal of the hardtop from below.
Need to do this before the headliner installation.
The plastic clips are for the lighter polished anodised aluminum strips.

Roger that, thanks Walter.  I have all the brass clips and the screws ready to go back on (I even polished the damn things... How sad is that???).

I'm assuming then it's just a question of applying a suitable sealant at each of the 12 holes to keep it watertight.

Thanks again and best regards,

Terry

Absolutely! After you install the rails and the putty/sealant or whatever you have used has had enough time to cure, take a hose and spray water from the outside from every possible angle on it and check for leaks before you install the headliner.  It may save you from a very frustrating repeat.  :o

Hallo Terry

I do it this way, rubber on both sides. It is absolute dry.
My Hardtop was delivered without the chrome so have to drill the hols and buy an new chrome set
I don't like the plastic clips, so i cut the clips and drill m 6 screws in the plastic

Great stuff, thanks once again Peter.  I now have a solid idea on how to approach this.

And thanks to everyone else for their kindly advice.

Cheers,

Terry

Hello Peter,
that is a nice alternative for putty ("Fensterkitt")! Did you buy ready made rubber disks - if so where? - or did you cut them out from a rubber sheet?
How well will the rubber withstand high temperatures when the car is parked in full sunshine before it dries out and becomes brittle, that is my only question.
We have lots of those days here in SoCal, as you know.  ;)

{as an aside. If you decide to go to California instead of Florida for your next vacation, come by and I'll let you drive my Pagoda.}

Hello

i take the rubber from a high temperature water pipe with a thin hole in it. On the roof i cut it a little smaller, so it fits under the Chrome.
I put a little bit " Fensterkitt " under the clips and the rubber.
I think this works.

But the realy hard work is replays the "Side Windows" at the Hardtop  ???
