Removing front seat on W111

Tried to remove front passenger seat on '68 111 coupe today. Removed the rear two and the front two bolts. Thought everything was going well until I discovered there is a side bolt on one of the rear mounts. I tried removing it and it just spun.

Seems as though there is a hidden nut (I hope) but can't figure out how to get to it. Either that or it is a weld or cage nut and it has broken (please no).

Anybody with experience on this? I really appreciate the help!!!!

I looked at the epc and am not sure where the bolt is you are talking about.  Does your seat have raise lower and front back functions?  It may be different than the 108 mount.  I sent you an email with my phone number.  You can call me between 5-11 pm any day.

Wallace,

I think your dealing with a cage nut. You would not be able to find it to put a wrench on it as it is located inside the rocker panel. You will probably have to force the assembly out somehow, maybe using a pry bar, then you would be able to get a wrench or pliers on the cage nut to remove it. New ones should be available from the dealer.

Does the one that "spins" look like item 8 in the picture?

Hello,

Most likely the nut is spinning in it's cage or it was welded to the inside of the rocker and has broken loose. Use a saws-all or a hacksaw blade to cut the bolt between the seat track and inner rocker if this is the case.

Thanks for all of the replies.

It was a caged nut and somehow it started spinning. I had to jam the nut with a screwdriver and it slowly (1 hour) worked it's way out. Thank goodness it wasn't a welded nut!

Beware of the supposedly easy jobs; there's always one hidden nut!

The 6mm bolt was about 40mm long so of course it took awhile given that length. I had sprayed cavity wax in my rockers about a year ago. There was some on the bolt's threads and I wonder if that created too much friction and caused the nut to spin. The silver lining is that at least there is a decent amount of cavity wax in the rockers and there are replacement caged nuts.

The picture that 280se guy provided is exactly what I have. I found it just now in the starting 1959 BBB. It is not in the starting 1968 BBB. A lot of good stuff in the earlier 1959 version that isn't in the later one.

Hello Wallace,

Yes, having both early and late BBB really helps. There is so much information on so many different models in both of these BBBs that, a lot of times it takes longer to find the information, than to do perform the fix!
