Original Vinyl on Driver Side Carpet Disintegrating
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:21:39 »
The original vinyl on the driver side carpet is disintegrating despite using a rubber mat over it since I've had it. It has a part number on the top right corner, near the gas pedal. Does anyone know if this piece of carpet is reproduced with the part number? Anyone with any experience replacing this? If so, where's the best place to look for this carpet? Thanks!

On a separate note, I tried to post a picture twice.  Once with a 10 megapixel camera and once with a cell phone with few megapixels.  Both got kicked back and I had to retype post 3 times. What's the key to posting jpegs here?? Thanks!!

Bootes:

When creating a forum post, look to the bottom left of the large box where you type in your forum questions/comments for " Additional Options" and you will see "Attach:" where you can Browse and attach as many as four 256 KB or smaller jpeg files.  Do not use the insert image option that is above the text box.

Hey guys,

Take a look at my original carpet and then take a look at the samples from Buds Benz in the Atlanta area. They are supposedly one of the best in the country.  None of them match up. Not even close. I thought there were exact duplications out there (pertaining to shape/size)?  I don't even see any snaps. Anyone have any experience in this area? Any other upholsterers out there worth checking out? Thanks!

Jeff at www.cocomats.com might be able to help you out.  Might be able to sew a new vinyl heel pad onto your existing carpet.

I ordered an original carpet set for my 280sl from the dealer back in the mid '90s. I waited 4-6 weeks for them to ship from Germany and still was missing 2 pieces but luckily I got the driver's floor piece with the part number on it. I don't think the factory has offered the original sets since about that time.
I have since "searched the world" for those last two matching pieces and got samples from all of the sources I could locate.  I found that the supplier with the most original materials was Klaus Herman Mayer in Stuttgart (www.cabrio.de). In the US, GAHH seems to have the best materials available.
You have an advantage in that you have the original for a pattern. I would get samples and determine which matches the original best and then buy a few yards of that material and take it to a local upholstery shop and have them cut it and bind it as the original was and also install your original snaps.  They shoulod also be able to find a heel pad that would be similar to the original.  You would then only be missing the part numbers, but unfortunately I don't think they are available any more.

Try GAHH for the carpet kits.  They may have a close match.  Their softtop was very high quality.
