Cleaning up the paint? suggestions

My car has a beautiful paint job, but it was not done by someone who knew much about our cars.  What's the best way to take paint off certain areas (door jambs, chrome, etc) in order to clean up the paint a bit?

I would use a light abrasive like a white rubbing compound or chrome polish.
