The center red light will come on when the doors are opened.  This light also functions as the indicator light when there is a malfunction in the brake system.

From the 280 sl Owner’s Manual:
"Brake control light (in instrument cluster, underneath the generator indicator light). The control light will show red if the brake fluid in the reservoir is at the minimum mark (see a MB dealer immediately).
You may check the functioning to the control light by opening one of the doors; the light must show red."

I get a yellow light in my instrument cluster when I open the door of my early 67 Euro 250SL.  Sounds different from everyone else.

Tom,
Does your 250 have a 'brake fluid low' indicator switch on top of the brake fluid resevoir?

Naj, my car doesn't have a low brake fluid indicator.  It has all the early SL details vs. the later modifications, (#002650).

Hi, Tom,
This yellow light was in the cluster in the 230sls as well but not used. It was used for a different purpose in some sedans - there was a thread as I recall.
Some PO may have wired yours to indicate 'open door'.
On my 230, I used it to warn of low oil pressure. I was able to change it to red with a plastic 'window' from another spare cluster.

Naj, that is interesting.  In my original 250SL owner's manual, the instrument cluster description does not show the center (yellow) indicator to have a function.  I think I'll keep it wired the way it is for the obvious benefit, and besides, I don't feel like tearing apart the dash again!
