230SL on youtube.com: A new video
« on: October 13, 2008, 21:07:00 »
Someone posted this video earlier this month, so I don't believe we've discussed it here yet. It's the original PR footage in English announcing the debut of the 230SL. I recall seeing something similar posted here awhile back in German, but this is made for the US market. The opening is a neat dissolve from the nose of each SL to its successor. In any event, it's outstanding footage of our favorite car:

Doug:

Thanks for finding this 15 minutes of Pagoda history.

The video clearly shows that Mercedes marketed the 230SL as a Sports car with Comfort. "Sports car" or variations was mentioned several times.

The clear explanation of the suspension and sightlines was interesting and it was nice to see how the soft top should work.

Hope this video does not disappear from youtube.

Doug: And the video emphasized your favorite things: Design Elegance, Performance, Comfort, and luggage.  :o)

Very cool. When was the driver's door grab handle eliminated?

Very cool.  The white car in the beginning is one of the prototypes, it's got the "Mercedes Benz" on the lower front fender.

During the braking section I thought I saw a smooth body panel under the front bumper.  Or was that just my imagination?

You are right in that this early pre-production W113 shown has a number of details differing it from a later, full production Pagoda. The rear door edge is fully chromed, shape of armrest on doorskin and the padding on the dash being rounded, for instance.

Note about the closing of the soft top in this film: If you do this in the manner shown, you will severely shorten the life expectancy of textile and frame... Be gentle and careful with the soft top, tuck corners in etc, this will allow for long service of your top. :)

I love that clip! So is this English-speaking one the original version -- with the German one a spin-off?

Kevin, I know that number 000871 has the grab handle. What is interesting is the handle is "flatter" than the passenger's side or the hard-top handles. Thought is this was to give a little more knee room getting out.

You can download it from YouTube if you buy the application TubeSock - google it, think its around USD 20,-
Then just copy/paste the YouTube url into the application and it will download the whole clip to your harddisc to be savoured again and again..

I've always wondered where these were shown originally, such as car shows, theaters, on television?

What a great promotional video. Interesting, that they attributed 170 horsepower, even to the 230SL. I agree that this must have been a pre-production car for use in car shows, etc. I also noticed the painted left and right dash chrome vents to match the rest of the dash.

Thanks for that.  That 14 minute clip was like going back in time.  And again, it's weird for me to see the Pagoda driven so hard.  Gotta try that one day  ;)

Well, it is 170hp SAE, 150hp DIN... In this film, perhaps aimed at the US market, they stated the SAE number

Here's my collection of youtube Pagoda videos.  These include any video which has a Pagoda even for a short period of time.  Since I haven't had time to sort through them all there are probably duplicate videos as well as a couple of non-Pagoda videos that amused me, so don't be surprised if you come across a Tatra or similar video.

I have them all saved as mp4 files but since they amount to ~500MB it's a bit impractical to email them to anyone.  If someone wants me to open my ftp port so the can download the files, I will.

I had the good fortune of commuting into the City this morning with fellow member and friend, Aashish, who had a great suggestion: why not post this vintage factory footage on the splash page of this site? It's awfully entertaining to watch regardless of which aspects of ownership interest you. Peter, what say you?

The scene discussing the design of the front brakes shows a body panel between the 2 front fenders, under the front bumper.  This panel hides the exposed lower section of the radiator.  I guess this panel was eliminated during production.  Too bad.  I think it adds to the cars beauty.

I guess the panel was deleted to improve cooling?

My '64 has the dash painted around the vents just like in the video.
