Kangol seat belts
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:46:11 »
Hello all,

I have an original set of Kangol 3 point seat belts. They are a bit tired but can be restored. Does anyone know where the decals on the plastic buckle can be found?

Thanks!

Underneath the back seat of a 114 or 108 sedan of the same era.

The rear seat belts always ended up in a knot and were rarely used, so they ended up sliding through the crack between the seat cushion and seat back. The rear seat belt buckles have been hidden from the sun for 35 years and are usually in very good condition.

I think those decals are being reproduced today. Try Bob Geco in this group. He's the local Decal Guru.

Thanks for the leads.

My seat belts have a Kangol decal with what I think is a kangaroo on them. Did all MB's have the star decal on them?

I found stickers (with the star) or ebay.  Search on Kangol.

Are there places that put on new straps? I wouldn't want to trust 40 year old seatbelts in a crash.

When I first purchased my car, I retrofitted a set of classic seatbelts from Andover (http://www.andoauto.com/). They also mentioned that if you send them your old belts, they can replace all the webbing using the old buckles. I'm sure this is not the only company that provides this service.

There's a place called Snake Oyl https://ssnake-oyl.hostasaurus.com/mm5/merchant.mvc that will reweb your belts for you.
I had my belts rewebbed by Randy Bynum in California. His e-mail address is chev_camino@hotmail.com  I got his information from this forum three years ago so I don't know if he still does this.

My understanding about the decals or stickers on the buckle is that if your car was delivered in the US then you got a Kangol decal; if your car was delivered in Europe then you got a Mercedes decal.

That's not correct. I've definitely seen it both ways on US-spec cars.

I talked with Bob G and he has the decals. According to him, early seat belts have the Kangol decal (it doesn't have a kangaroo like I stated earlier and I don't know how I dreamed that up) and after '69 the buckles have the star on them. However, Bob knows a whole lot more about that than I do. My '68 belts are defintely original and have the Kangol decal.

Thanks for all of the input. I am glad I found the decals!

I wonder how Kangol went from seatbelts to hats for rappers like LL Cool J and Run DMC?

Slight digression here... I noticed the seatbelts in my wife's 2004 Volvo are also from the UK. Is the UK the unofficial seatbelt capital of Europe?
