Optional Fog Light Mounting

Any pix or description of how the optional fog lights mount to the front bumpers?
Picked up a set of chrome Hella 160's and may consider mounting on my 71 280SL, if not they'll go on my G55.

I cheated a little and attached mine in the holes left by taking off the bumper guards... works a treat, no drilling required!





I could not find any real measurements as to where to position them, but on period photographs (this one is from Mercedes-Benz book  Faszination SL (W 113), see Documentation page in the Technical Manual) they appear to be a little closer to the normal headlights (i.e. moved more to the outside).

I've always seen original driving lights drilled directly into the bumper. They are positioned at the outermost edges of the chrome grill.

IMNSHO, the new Hellas stand out on a Pagoda. They're thin and all, but I prefer the old Hellas that you can still often find on ebay. They were very common on 1973-1974 W114 sedans that are now parts cars.

(Also, since you're clearly debating the merits here, I'll add that I think it looks a little busy to mount extra lights on a Pagoda with the bumper guards in front.)

Your "two cents" is always appreciated.
I don't have bumper guards on the front and the bumpers are too new to drill !!!

After I get the lights, I'll see if I can fabricate an unobtrusive bracket possibly using the bumper mounting points as a fixing point.

I might be lazy in wiring them by using two relays which will have them on with the parking lights, then off when the headlights are on....?

Or just do it the correct way with a switch on the dash !

You can definitely fabricate a clip. I've seen that done nicely on another make.

If you're at all curious about the old Hellas, go to ebay and run a search on "Mercedes fog + vintage" and you'll see one dealer in the ebay stores selling several at $35. That's a bargain, if condition is good.

Looks like a plated stamped steel part....
I'll try to replicate with some aluminum flat bar stock.

Add this task on to my long list of parts to install when spring finally arrives !!!

The same Bosch fog light was used on a 250C/8 280C. The only difference is the bulb design and lens design, later were more desireable. Do not have pictures of mine. They are buried in boxes above the garage. I have a little elf who runs my parts department  upstairs.

Here is the mounting on a Hella fog light.

The small hole in the lamp above the mount is the drain plug...not always efficient so the bottom of the inside reflector is often a bit rusted.

The nut of the mounting bolt tightens against a lock washer (not seen in the photo) to prevent loosening.

A small rubber pad can be seen. This protects the top surface of the bumper.
