DB 158 and DB 169 paint
« on: May 14, 2025, 01:37:03 »
I am coming along with my restoration of my 250SL California Coupe, but am having quite the time trying to locate these two paints or acceptable alternatives. It has been quite interesting.

The DB 158, for the inside of the bumpers, does not seem to be available and I realize that others have successfully used Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2x Almond Gloss or Krylon Ivory Glass. The Rust-Oleum appears to only be available in the small commercial spray cans and my painter wants to apply it with his spray gun. Have those that have used it just used the small cans? How does it come out? The Krylon can be purchased in regular paint cans and thinned for use in a spray gun. Has anyone had experience with this?

The DB 169 for the rockers is very interesting. In some of the previous posts there have been comments that the rockers were sometimes a grey colour, and that is what came out with this formula when my painter had it made up. I always thought it was a very dark grey, essentially black, and somewhat darker than the DB 164 for the trunk. I looked a little further and the Lordco paint specialist said it was very odd but he found two colours for this number- Stone Grey Light and Oxidium Black Metallic. From everything I see I think that black is the appropriate colour.

Any insight into these issues would be appreciated.

"DB" ?  I thought the paint was either Glasurit or Herbert.

Most automotive paint shops should have the db 158 color mix formula. It is grey white. Just call around and see if you can find one. The other issue is gloss. Behind the hubcaps or bumpers should be a matte finish, not gloss. If you use base coat paint, that will be close to the correct gloss.
