FWIW the chrome tips on my (stainless) system I can fairly easily take off and put back on with bare hands. They've stayed on through tens of thousands of miles so I guess what I'm saying is they don't need to fit on all that tightly.

Took my angle grinder with an abrasive pad and thoroughly cleaned the steel tail pipes.  Test fitting the new tips was still quite snug at the first detent.  While some have said they slide on and off easily, I suspect the original steel exhaust is perhaps a touch larger diameter than the stainless.  I then coated the tips with anti-seize and installed the tip with a wooden block and hammer.  I could tell I'd get it all the way on.  Repeat with the other side and all is well.  I like the look.  Easier job with the bumper off.  I discovered a stripped cage nut and was able to tap the nut slightly larger and tighten up with the proper size bolt.

Need a little confirmation or confidence building.  My "original, I think" chrome tips extended ~ 1" past bumper.  The new to be installed square tips are longer and extend ~2" (sliding all the way in as far a possible.)

Which would be more correct: 1" or 2" past rear bumper?  On the picture- old on the left and new square on the right

More original/correct?  I don't know.
Look better?  The longer new ones.

Sadie, if you look at my picture from the first post - the squared tips extend exactly as the original ones were extending beyond bumper - I think it is about an inch. I have original rear muffler, properly fitted, meeting the rubber bumper. The original tips had cut outs that determined their length. I would therefore dare to say they were sticking out the proper distance - about an inch...

Thanks Pawel

Every time I walk past the car, I take a glance to see which might be "nicer" or more correct

Curious to see some input from others. At the moment, I thinking compromise.  The 2" does seems to stick out "much" more but not sure if it is just my eye seeing the change.

No rush as the last ones I installed I used some permatex when I got the new exhaust and it was a killer to get them off requiring a maap gas torch.  Once these are on, they will not be removed- ever

Here is a string from a past discussion about the exhaust tip length beyond the bumper. A number of photos too:

Thank you for your research help.  Gave me  much more confidence with my installation of the square tips.
