Who in the world, sells a car without a gas cap? Even if it was an ill-fitting aftermarket part. Did the car have rubber on the wheels?

Welcome to the group. The original ones are hard to come by and expensive. E-bay is probably the best to search. Take a look at the forums part supplier list. Some of them sell aftermarket ones.

I was waiting for someone else to say something about Mike Simon's post.  I am glad "BigBlock" said something

There are members here who are new, inexperienced and need guidance from the other members of our group.  Why make a fellow Pagoda member feel awkward (and I am being nice)....
Simply a stupid and unnecessary comment.
What good comes out of making a comment like that?
Mike, I think you owe our new member an apology

Welcome 1967BigBlock,

As mentioned, ebay is a great source. Just search for w113 gas cap and several options will pop up.

If this is your first Pagoda you will love it.

I'm on my third having purchased my first in 1995 but I've been around these amazing cars since 1980 when my dad bought a 1965 230SL. I'm by no means an expert but if I can help in any way just PM me.

Big block,
Welcome to the group. I purchased a replacement cap from Palmbeach classics. (Palmbeachclassics.com) Great price, lockable, chrome.

I believe that  have an extra gas cap, although it is not chrome or locking if you are looking for an inexpensive option.

Just get a reproduction.

No one will know it's one since you're holding the keys (OEMs have double-sided keys IIRC.  Repro do not).

$$$ has the MB emblem on it:

Cheaper one does not:

Thank you, Rodd. A lot of people in forums tend to NOT read posts right or NOT understand what is said.
But for what it's worth, I apologize to 1967BigBlock, if I made him feel bad for buying a car without a gas cap. I guess we don't know the background of the whole story.

Big Block,

If you've got an amazing car, you may want to get the real deal from George at Authentic Classics (BTW one of our PagodaFest Sponsors!!!).  They are rare and expensive, but there is a certain Panache to seeing that Tri star on the gleaming cap.  A decade ago I ordered mine from Mercedes, and they matched the keys on my 1970 using the VIN.  Nice to have one key to the whole car.

If you drop a 440 six pack under the hood of the 113, I will be impressed...

Buy it from here:

When I bought mine from using that exact part number from another outfit (no longer around:  genuinemercedesparts.com), I got a chrome cap with the Mercedes logo on it.

(no longer around:  genuinemercedesparts.com)

Over the years, I believe in defiance of the “rules” MBUSA sets up with its dealers, some dealers and/or dealer groups set up a mail order/online parts business. As this may take you away from your local dealer or the CC for parts, once they are discovered they disappear…

When you can’t get a real identifying name and physical address from the website that’s what you have.

Nothing wrong with ordering from them but that’s why they disappear.

Teahead,

That chrome filler cap in the pic is for an earlier Pagoda than 1970.  Later ones are single keyed to the car and have the keyhole in the middle (not to one side) to accommodate the two sided key.

Mike Simon, I'm not sure why your 71 would not have the chrome two sided cap with tristar.  Could it be that the caps were an upgrade at the dealer?    Interesting question to someone who might know.  Tom Hanson?

My parts list shows a change in p/n for the 280SL gas cap.: 000471 2030 up to serial no 10355 and 000 471 4730 from 10356 on. Ymos is listed as the supplier.

This morning I checked on inventory for Part # 000 471 20 30. There is not a single Mercedes-Benz dealer in the country that has one, none of the MB warehouses show any, and none in Germany as well. It is possible the classic center has inventory, as that is a separate database. Last time the part was available through MB list price was $212.00, Looks like you will have to buy it from an aftermarket supplier at a markup, or a used one.

That is for a sedan, such as W108. They did not spend the money chroming those as they are not visible to the exterior of the car,  they are hidden behind a flap where the rear license plate mounts. It has been replaced and rekeyed.

Teahead, when did you buy yours and how much was it?  Some vendors have it with the Star for $800 and up.  The one without the star is around  $175

According to our tech manual, all were chromed for the w113 and the non chromed caps were on sedans

It has been on the car since I bought it in 1982. Wonder, if it was replaced, why someone back then, would not get and original cap and rather go through the effort to re-key a sedan part.

I paid $212 for it.

However, it appears no more are to be had.

I just tried to buy it again and was told in a follow-up email they are going to cancel my order since it's NLA.

I'm afraid big bux will be needed if you want one w/an MB emblem on it.

Right.

The one I got from MB a couple years ago has just the one-sided one.

Not sure what's correct for a 70 280SL, but I'd be hard pressed to pay >$850USD for one now of either type.

Ah, the prices. This will be like the saga of Grill Star & Barrel prices...

Some years ago, you could get a Grill Star and Barrel, new from MB, for under $400. Many members here who needed one were downright flabbergasted, shocked and aghast at such a price.

If they were still available today at anywhere NEAR that price, the line would be out the door...just saying.

Bizarrely, when you buy this locking cap as a stand alone item from Mercedes it comes with a one sided key but if you buy a complete lock set, which includes the locking fuel cap, then the key for the cap is two-sided. Go figure....

Are you saying that this "NLA" gas cap is actually "A" as part of a set?  I wonder why MB would do that?  Could full car restoration (needing a full set of locks) hold a significantly higher priority for MB than servicing customers who need individual parts?  There would be more demand for the gas caps as individual parts, but if they run out then a restoration would be out of luck regarding the cap.  Interesting....   ???

Sounds like you requested a locking fuel cap to key number. That's not something I've ever tried to do.

One more time, 1967BigBlock. As someone else has also pointed out, my comment was not sarcastic and it was not directed towards you! It was my expression of disbelief about what and how people sell a car. As you seem to not want to get this, I will stay away from any of your posts, even if I would have something valuable to contribute, OK?
