Checking if engine and chassis number match - 1965 230SL
« on: February 03, 2023, 12:27:58 »
Hello,

Sorry for the very basic question but I am looking to purchase a car without a data card. I have located the engine number and the chassis number - Both numbers start off with the same 4 digits (10-00) but the last 4 digits are different.

Thanks!

They won't be the same and the same 4 digits is a new one on me
For a 230:
Chassis (VIN) should begin 113 042
Engine should begin 127

Hello Chris, as far as i know, without a data card you can't tell if the engine was original to the car if that's what you're hoping

If you click on the technical manual above left, and then search Data, Engine, VIN, you'll find everything you need to know about chassis, engine numbers and Data cards

Good luck

Ventureman,
Also in the Technical Manual you will find a section on Buying a Car, which includes a section on Pre-Purchase Inspection.

If the car is in the U.K. he may not need a data card. The engine serial number may be on some other documents. In Germany, it is in the title. Some European countries required engine serial numbers to be documented as insurance rates were tied to hp rating. Thus it is needed to document the correct engine is in the car.
Also, I don't think the OP refers to the car model and engine type numbers as the first 4 digits being the same. He notes (10 00), which is LHD and MT plus the first 2 digits of the serial number which, of course, will never "match"
