WHISKER REMOVAL
« on: January 16, 2023, 18:11:00 »
In process of replacing the side window "whisker/felt strips".  Inner whisker came out easily after removing the inside door panel but not sure how to remove the outer whisker?  Any hints?  Actually looks like the window might need to be removed?

Hmmmm.... John,

Well, I don't remember exactly anymore (since I only did that on the non-restored car during disassembly round about  1997/1998,
but I think to believe that you first have to remove the upper outer (brass) chrome strip up from the door....

If you roll down your door window, you should be able to see barely from the inside where the clamps for the outer chrome molding are located. Then you have to very carefully lift off the outer chrome strip from just these clamps from the outside with a flat plastic tool.... something the like Kevin mentioned. Very carefully with some soft cloth between tool and outer door skin ....  not to damage anything.
At least the chrome strip has to come off. I think to remember that just these outside clamps (A001 988 9378) also hold the outside whiskers.
You just cannot remove the whiskers from the window glass side without removing the chrome molding first....
At least that's what my faint memories tell me from when I removed mine round about 1998 ....  ???

Best,

Thank you both for very helpful information.

While I welcome any other comments or suggestions, this information helped in my decision- the outside whisker is staying! !

I tried prying lightly but I am sure that there is a very good chance that either the chrome or more importantly my paint will be damaged either in removal or reinstall.   I'm too nervous to risk it

This whisker change BTW is in preparation of replacing the (original) side windows which have vertical scrapes from fifty-eight years of use

John,
I am about to reassemble the outer door chrome with the wiskers. I’m my case the whiskers are attached to the chrome with (4) double clips as you see in the photos. In addition the chrome has (4) additional simple clips to attach to the door. All of the clips clamp into the door. However, I ordered a replacement clip set and it only contains the double ones. I am not sure if it is absolutely necessary to remove the chrome in order to attach the wishers but it is is definitely easier that way.

if you are putting new whiskers/felt, you can pull the felt up/off and you will see the clips.  Then you can pry the clips and it will pull the chrome up.   This is another way to do it.  But only if putting new whiskers as it will bend the whiskers you remove.

I'mgetting there in preparation of window replacement and which has lead to another conundrum.

Both my windows have scratches in almost identical areas. As I have said I believe these to be the original glass windows.  I do know the mirrors were changed but the new bolts are not near the glass.  The scratches  are vertical and fine,  which I have tried to identify in the attached pictures.  The conundrum:  After  pulling the door panels I was able to look and feel inside the door.  Both windows have as I said similar scratches on the OUTSIDE of the glass.  Looking and feeling around I see nothing in the way or near the glass that would scratch.  Any ideas on  a potential culprit.

What am I missing?  Don't want similar issues with the new glass

Did the scratches appear during your ownership?  Who knows what might have happened with broken things in the past?  I had to replace window jaw guides when I got my car, but I assume other things can break or come apart and create opportunities for scratches.

Hello John, perhaps there is something inside the "whisker" that is scratching the glass as it's wound up and down. It's strange it's in the same position on both sides.  I read somewhere that if either the wrong clips were used or fitted incorrectly this could cause scratching.  Do you think the whiskers and trim may have been removed and refitted in the past?  Perhaps you should check before fitting the new glass

You may have already bought new glass, but i'm an advocate of restoring and conserving where possible, if you have original glass it's a shame to change it, if the scratches are fine and superficial, have you considered trying to polish them out with a compound?  there are several on the market and plenty of videos, and even companies who will do it for you, but i don't have any experience of how successful it is, just a thought

Bob H, that''s an interesting idea.  I have no idea where to start, but it sure would save mucho $ an much work.
I have not ordered glass from the Classic Center as yet,.  Maybe worth experimenting and U-tubing so see some ideas  Suggestions always welcome.

To answer rwmastel: the windows were scratched as they are now when I acquired the car 30+years ago, so it would be very difficult to determine the cause.  The problem is actually 113.org as it has given me new incentive to keep upgrading my car (with the help of all the Forum members).

I've seen larger pieces of dust ( sand ) scratch door glass. It will embed into the whiskers and can be difficult to remove. Always wash your side glass off before rolling your windows down if your car gets covered in dirt.

Cerium Oxide is the compound used to polish glass. Amazon will have several options on it.
It's a slow process but it does produce results.

I've never seen wavy scratches in door glass so they may be vandal inspired.

My mistake Dan.  I had put the masking tape on the window to highlight where the scrapes were but did the "scribbles" in marker.  The scrapes are actually very fine and straight

We have a few cats around here. 55 years of breeding Siamese colour points and I've seen a few scratches in just about everything, including me.

I am adding to my original post, though it might be better as a new one...let's see.

For replacement of the side windows, there is a small bracket noted on the attached parts diagram (#46) that sits at the front of the door frame at the edge of the felt strip.  Classic Center has it now as no longer available.

Anyone have a source?  Tried Buds Benz parts listing, not listed

Problem solved! Didn't find any suppliers but was able to remove the beat-up set screw thanks to Aerokroil!  That stuff always amazes me
