What's this for?
« on: February 04, 2022, 14:04:26 »
In my tool kit (230sl) is the attached pictured tool.  I see no reference to it anywhere, nor does it show anywhere in any pictures etc in the tool kit write-up in the tech manual.  It is approximately 9 inches long, with an apparent part number 000 581 8501 (difficult to read)

What is it for?

John,

It's not in my 280SL toolkit.

If you don't get an answer here, send the photo and make a call to https://www.samstagsales.com/

Does it fit the drain plugs on the oil pan, (manual) transmission or rear axle?

Hard to see in the picture but one end is a "nut driver" socket with a number 10 on the shaft and the other end has a number 11 with the reverse ("nut")

Shaft also says Matador and Germany

looking at the numbers again, it could also be "9501"

Thanks to the lead by su8pack1 and ebay, found the attached picture on the listing.  Now I know what it is, but now leads to the question of why it's in the tool kit, a question  which will never be answered.

Someone some day put it there not to forget to give it back to someone who left it in the car by accident...

The system does not recognize this part number.

It doesn't fit the nomenclature of the dealer service tools.  Dealer service tool usually start with chassis or engine of first use then the group 589.  For a W113 it would be 113 589 and for an M130 engine 130 589.  Usually an 01 in the last 2 digits denotes more than one part to the tool.  The complete tool number would end in 00 and it's parts would be 01, 02, 03 etc.

Hi,
nomenclature of service tools doesn't necessary start with model or engine type number. General tools had similar numbers mentioned here, see att. file.
The part numbers assigned to the tools have the following basic meaning:
Part number 115 589 02 23 00
or                  000 589 02 23 00
                     115                               model or unit type
                     000                               available in the stores
                            589                        construction group for tools
02                   sequential number of the tool
                                        23              tool type
                                             00         complete tool
