Well, this is just a guess but that's the way springs work. They apply tension to a movable object to help open or close that object.

What model is this? I am assuming since you posted in the W11X section, this isn't a W113.

My W111 coupe trunk lid does not pop up and it has new trunk hinges/springs. In this case, the springs keep the trunk lid up, but do not pop the lid when open. Cabs have different hinges and springs than do the coupes. So maybe they do?

thank you for your reply.
it's a 112 cabriolet.  the trunk rises at the hinge/spring point when closed.
only on the drivers side.

Ok, the cabs are a different hinge/spring system than the coupes. Last time I looked, the springs were still available for the cabs. I think the part number is 111 758 80 26. I had a pair 10 years ago but sold them.

So you are saying that the trunk springs are forcing the trunk up when it is closed? Or are you saying the trunk lid pops up only on the Driver's side when you open it? A picture might help. I knew a guy that rebuilt these for a cab and it was a giant PITA. It can be done though.
