Alternator Source
« on: April 12, 2021, 02:33:13 »
I think the bearing on the alternator on my '66 230SL is heading south.  Any recommended sources for a replacement?

Thanks,

Lowell

I bought one from Autohaus AZ : part no. AL64X (OE Reman) Boach Alternator 35 AMP. for my 1963 230Sl looked brand new. Great low price, exact fit.

Thanks!  That was just what I was going to do.  But a question -- I removed the small retaining wire on the plug, but I can't pull the plug out.  Is there something else retaining it?  Or is just old age?  I'm reluctant to put to much force on it until I know that there's nothing else holding it in.

Is there any special trick to removing the plastic plug?  I have folded up the wire retainer, but I can't seem to pull the plug out and don't want to force it.

Back when I replaced my alternator during some engine work, I recall that the 3 pin connector was indeed very hard to remove. It took some liberal force to remove it. Try working it back and forth with 2 flat bladed screw drivers between the alternator case and the connector.

Thanks, Tyler.  I was able to work it free as you described.  But not a fun job, especially trying to line up all the bits that compose the bottom attachment point.  But I finally got it done.  Alas, that wasn't the source of my noise!
