Scotch Whisky
« on: January 24, 2021, 20:00:55 »
I have been a fan of Scotch Whisky for a long time, especially Single Malts. In recent years, I have turned and concentrated on Islay Malts because of the heavily peated personalities such as Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. I have one unique bottle of Glenlivet which I bought some 40 years ago during a business trip to the U.K. It that needs a new home among other special bottles of a collection.
My question to our U.K. members is: Is there a market for this in the U.K.? I don't think we have enough "Royalists" in the U.S. who would appreciate this.

If you are trying to sell this, I'm sure there is a market here.

The USA is the largest importer of Scotch Whiskey; (something like $1.3 billion); it has a larger number of British Ex-Pats, and probably a larger number of Anglophiles who love "royalty".
There's also a large and growing demand for single malts, thus a high appreciation for them here. So, I think, as the magic 8 ball might say, "All signs point to yes".

Try these guys... https://scotchwhiskyinternational.com/en/

They buy and sell and invest in rare scotch whiskeys, and have an impressive museum. You are likely to get some interest from them.

Mike, why not just drink it.  Open it for a milestone birthday, anniversary, birth etc. Or just because it is today.

;D ;D Hi guys, thanks for the feedback! As I said, I really don't like Speyside malts. Not anymore so much. Not even a 25 yr old Glenlivet.
I see the "Whisky Exchange" sells it (at least one bottle) for $1,400.

Yes, Achim. many started with "Racke rauchzart", moved to VAT69, finally came to Dimple, Royal Salute and Johnny Walker "Swing" before arriving at serious stuff... 8) ;D ;D

Maybe you could find someone to trade your bottle for something more American like a Bourbon.  Visitors to my Garage seem to like Bourbon more than scotch.  You could trade your bottle for the following Bourbon. (I did the math using Bevmo pricing)

10 bottles of Jack Daniels Apple (not strong so great for working in the Garage)
9 tiny bottles of Jack Daniels Apple
8 bottles of 4 Roses Small Batch
7 bottles of Gentleman Jack
6 bottles of Evan Williams Single
5 bottles of Old Grandad - good with Coke
4 bottles of Makers Mark
3 bottles of Woodford Reserve
2 Bottles of Willet Single Barrel
1 bottle of Knob Creek Straight

That should appease all of the bourbon drinkers that come to your garage and you can send them off with the mini apple Jack for those cold drives home with the top down.  Wheated, non wheated and Jack (not technically bourbon but most people don't understand nor want to be edumacated on the difference)

Thanks! Personally, I do not care for Bourbon and do not want to get involved in this. Someone from this site has indicated he is interested in the bottle and it may be gone soon.
If not, I may keep it for a while.

Well, I was born and raised on vodka and that is where I stayed.... Wyborowa then, Belvedere today.

Those little differences...

It is amazing what demand does to original recipes. When i was young(er), Vodka came from Russia or Poland and was made from potatoes. Now it is made in France, Canada, Finland and other countries and is distilled from anything that can be fermented and will produce alcohol.
Same thing with Scotch. The barley malt used to be dried in peat-fired kilns and the distillate was aged in Sherry casks. now they fire the kilns with coal and use Oak and Wine barrels.
With the end product becoming mainstream and the need to cater to the public taste, a lot of the original character has been washed away.
You used to be able to smell and taste the difference between Irish and Scotch. No more. (Unless you stick with Islay malts - that's the main reason for my preference)

Whisky for Scottish manufacture, Whiskey for the Irish variant 😁

My understanding is that there is a far stronger ‘royalist’ following in the states than in UK, we sort of live with them [the royals] so there is no novelty factor for us, gwad bless ‘em 🤣🤣🤣. Mind you, you have the pleasure of Harry [the royal formerly known a Prince] and Megan, which has saved us a few quid 😉

Thank you, Merc_Girl. I didn't even go there. Was afraid it would add to the negative notion we "Scotch lovers" encounter as being "stuck up"

‘Tis fact, nothing stuck up about it 😁
No idea why the different spelling, but as pointed out in different chats, English is a very morphous language 🤣
