Off-Topic: Fintail Barn Find
« on: August 29, 2006, 17:35:16 »
One thing I have learned in my short time on this forum, is how much low-mileage, rust-free original cars are valued.  Well, here is a Fintail meeting that description.  It's from Oregon, always garaged, 60-something miles, last on the road in the 1980's.  Rather improbably, it has turned up in the DC area.  Eurasian Imports in the Tysons area is getting it back on the road.  The major problems are that the clutch disk has rusted itself to the flywheel, and that the gas has turned to peanut butter.

My parents owned a fintail almost identical to that one back in 65.
For a second I could smell the Tex vinyl when I opened up the picture as though I had just opened the door.

I would like to fine a Fintail as my daily driver. I remember driving one many many years ago as a loaner car from a mercedes-benz independent service was doing work on my fathers 280SL. I remember how rock solid this car felt and how big inside it seemed. I know the trunk is huge just what I need.
If anyone nows of a fintail for sale let me now.

...my suspicion is that once they solve the clutch disk/flywheel issue, and somehow deal with the old gas-turned-to sludge issue and get it running, they'll find a few more issues to suck someone's pocketbook dry!  Cars do not age well sitting in a barn--particularly in time periods measured in decades.  Someone needs to ask the question why was it parked in the barn in the first place?  Is this a mystery for CSI-Tyson's Corners??

At least the rust won't get in the way of the other work they'll be doing... ;)
