I was thinking: training purposes, testing, showroom, advertising folder...

In the late 40's/early 50's dealers sometimes had plastic windows in the hood of a showroom car so prospects could easily see under the hood.  The hood could be removed when the car was sold and replaced with an uncut one.  Perhaps this is an MB version of that?
