Correct kick panel speaker cover
« on: February 09, 2020, 16:00:28 »
The first attached photo of a kick-panel speaker cover has an edge that appears to mimic the look of the cover being two pieces rather than a single. It is what I thought I was buying.

The second photo I what I received.  Can anyone tell me which is correct?  I paid over $200 to get the correct speaker covers and want to make sure it’s correct for the money. They came with Koenig SL 10 k speakers attached.  I’ve seen similar looking speaker covers sell for much less, but without the speaker.

Thanks

John

close.  The Becker Autosound people in NJ have the correct ones.  I initially tried different 4"speakers but couldn't get to work with my 7amp Becker Stereo.

Be very cautious about how you connect to the amplifier and what you connect to it.  No provision is allowed for a 3 speaker set up.  Only 2 or 4 speakers can be used. Unless you have one speaker in the front and one in the rear You'll have to forego the use of your dash speaker.  Please refer to the picture below for reference. (these are factory drawings and literature).

Mercedes never intended for the Pagoda to have more than the one dash speaker.  However, Becker did offer a stereo set up for them for subsequent installation (though, not approved by Mercedes).  In order to correctly use this offering one of the four connectivity diagrams below must be used.  If the connections aren't adhered to you'll have an impedance mismatch.  In a typical Becker 4 speaker set up each speaker is a 4Ω speaker. The 4 inch speakers are rated at 20 watts each.  Essentially, if the total impedance in a series circuit with both inductive and capacitive elements is less than the impedance of either element separately, then the total current in that circuit will be greater than what it would be with only the inductive or only the capacitive elements there. With this abnormally high current through each of the components, voltages greater than the source voltage may be obtained across some of the individual components....in particular the germanium transistors in your radio that are nearly impossible to find now. In these particular radios leaving out a component is futile to the radios well being long term.  And as far as connecting two channels into one speaker.....don't do it for the aforementioned reasons.  One or two speakers for left and right channel only.  And if using only two speakers for left and right no fader potentiometer is to be used.

Regarding originality, the originals didn't have screw mounting holes in the front of them. (see picture below) The caption underneath the picture translates to "Stereo speakers in the front, from mid-1971 onward"The actual speaker would screw to the car, and then the cover would snap on over the speaker.  What you've found is what was offered on later cars, but should work just fine.  As far as where to mount them, there is literature from Becker that gives measurements on where to mount them and to drill the screw holes and where to cut out the large hole for the permanent magnet.

The first two pictures look basically the same to me.  They are wrong in my opinion.  The 4 rivets on the face of the speaker cover don't belong there.   The speaker covers snaps onto a metal frame, and the speaker is mounted to the frame and the frame is mounted to the car.  These are NOT surface-mount speakers - part of the speaker is inside the kick panel and part of it is in the frame/cover.

See attached pics.

First pic is a picture of the correct cover and a metal frame without a speaker in it.  The speaker is riveted to the metal frame (with a hollow rivet) and then the 4 holes inside the rivets are used to screw the speaker into whatever it is being mounted on.   The the cover snaps onto the frame.

Second pic is the top view of the frame and the speaker cover.  Pretend there is a speaker as part of the frame.  See the two holes in the top (and bottom) of the speaker cover?  The fit over little round protrusions from the speaker frame.  And snap into place.

Third pic is just them snapped together.

I have the covers on eBay here:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/162815238901    for $50 a pair but I would really like to sell them off ebay.

I also have a pair of speakers that were re-coned.

I also have a few used speakers that sound good, and I think I threw away the bad speakers.

Thanks Aaron for all of the info. I understand much better now. I’m
Only doing the left and right speaker. I will use my wireless speaker with my phone if I want real good sound quality.

I’m in the process of ordering the interior now. I can use the diagram you sent to determine where the speaker opening goes.

Is the speaker secured to the kick panels with 4 screws going through the 4 holes, if so this is a variation of the speaker cover that I have never seen before (and I have seen dozens of these and might have as many)?   Granted, mine have all come from junkyard Mercedes cars (mostly W114s) and I've never seen a Pagoda in a junkyard...

Interesting.  I wonder if both could be correct...   Although I've never seen ones with screws coming through the front of the grill/cover.

My thought has always been that those speakers with visible mounting screws are reproductions of the snap on cover. I’ve seen old Becker brochures and all covers were snap on.

I believe Becker at the time made three different adjunct speakers.  The square type (used in 280SL with stereo radios) and two rectangular types (used in sedans, coupes, etc.).

The square ones that I posted were definitely used in W114 sedans and coupes.  That's where I got all my inventory back when those cars were common in the junkyards.

Unfortunately it’s too late for me to return the ones I bought with the mounting screws.
