I wonder if any of our friends in Germany/Europe has some pointers where to get a valve cover sticker for my German spec 280SL
Please note the completely different appearance to anything that is usually out there on the market. This is another mystery that goes with the unique cylinder head that is on my car

Everybody has a valve cover sticker. I have not seen one like the one on my car. the one available in the link from mbig (Thanks WRe!) has the correct CO2 values but is otherwise different. I may be anal, it is not about a quest for originality, but there are a few things with this car that are really, really unique and I hate to lose these.

As it is a German car, it is unlikely anybody in North America would have that particular sticker.

Is the picture you posted at the beginning of this thread your current valve cover decal?

If so, what are the dimensions? Alpinaltd (a forum member ) has the talent to take WRE's picture and create a very close reproduction. He could also use the pertinent parts of the US decal.

Can you repost a scanned picture of your decals and provide the dimensions of it? This will make even easier for Alpinaltd 👍

If you look at WRE's decal in the lower left corner you can see what looks like it could be a "108" part number. Couple this Mike Simon's post that he has a "unique" cylinder head.

Is there a possible connection?

Wow! That's the sticker!, WRe. Really, now how to find it to buy. yes, it could be a 108 part, but all the markings say it is applicable to the SL (113) too. My cylinder head says 280SEL/SL on it and is - as far as I know - the original part. I own the car since 1982 and the was no major engine work done before I bought it.

Here is the decal that authentic classics sells that is similar to Garry's. Notice that the part number is different. I'm not saying either is correct or not.

I have also gone through the late Bob Geco's decal catalog (maybe early version) and there is no reference to either decal.

Many of the stickers differ in the CO2 number. It depends on what country the car was intended for. I think the U.S. models had a lower number than the European ones.
looking at WRe's picture again, that sticker is not the one either, unfortunately. Where mine has the CO2 range listed, that sticker has some transmission info.

Notice the two pictographs in WRE's decal. They are what looks like a

1) manual gear shift on a transmission
2) automatic shift designation plate with red mark on P (Park)

The gear shift lever is a shorter non pagoda version.

I have never seen a horizontal shift position designation on a pagoda. Someone with an automatic can comment.

If the numbers on the lower left corner are the part-numbers for the sticker, mine is 108 584 07 40 and WRe's is 108 584 03 40

The valve decal i reproduced is as per Garry's and Authentic Classics. it can be found in the technical manual.

I found an engine for sale on ebay Germany that has the same cylinder head on it as my SL. The first one I found besides mine. It is, however, installed on a M130-980 and the motor is a "Tauschagregat". So, no telling if the head is original to the motor.
Seller claims it is for W113, which is not really the case.

Alpinaltd: That is really awesome. This is really close! From what I can still make out on my old decal, the idle rpm is given as 750 +/_ 50 and there are two red arrows in the intake and outlet of the left side schematic. I see several decals for different engines that have some, but not all the same features.

My decal came from a restoration workshop that got all the left over parts etc from a closed MB dealership some time ago and these decals were with the job lot.

Don’t know if it is specific to w113.

It’s measurements are 73mm x 73 mm

This is really exciting! We are almost there! We need a red 1 and 2 at the drawings of the inlet and exhaust valve and the corresponding numbers at the valve clearances. And on more red "flag" with whatever it says on it at the upper distributor vacuum connection.
I will try to take a better close-up of my decal at daylight tomorrow to see if we can make out these details. Some of it is faintly visible.

This is indicated by the little red marking to the far right, on the black distributor figure. Vacuum tube attached or lifted

Well, the question is: is the vac tube supposed to be connected at 4,500 rpm or not. I think my decal showed it to be, but not sure. Will check again.

Looking at the decal in daylight - with a magnifying class - I am still not 100% sure.
It looks like the upper image of the vacuum connection to the distributor shows a very faint red mark. And the rpm spec seems to be 750-800 or even 850, which is different to what I thought first.
However: Considering that nobody has actually seen one of these and there seem to be no originals around, I think was alpinaltd has done is as close as one could ever get and I would take that any time over any of the alternatives available!

Sure. Here you go. I think the location is probably very much standard, just below the second star on the cover. The size is square - not rectangular - at 75mm x 75mm

I wuold like, again, to thank alpinaltd and Mike for this sticker! This is fantastic!

Theorising: the idle ignition setting resembles 051 setting. We have the table saying the idle value is measured with vacuum. High rpm value (3000 in the table, 4500 on the sticker) is shown in the table without vacuum (no vacuum there anyway at this rpm range). I can imagine the red "pipe" on sticker at idle showing vacuum connection. But this may be me making up things.

If this kind of pictogram was used elsewhere, the designers of the labels were probably consistent in what they were showing for given series of labels. So that may be it.

Unless we find a better original of the sticker on my car, anything is more or less a guess. For anybody that is interested in a repro of that particular sticker should consider that it is probably not correct for any U.S. or other export 280SL. Again, while my motor is an original 130 983, the cylinder head (original on the engine) is somewhat weird. It says 280SEL/SL on it, has casting number 130 016 17 01 and a compression of 9.0.

I have been looking for the valve cover Euro sticker for some time and this one and the one posted by WRe are the only two I found. Seems others do not recall other stickers for Euro cars. They are both original and have the correct descriptions. They look like they are both correct, just two different versions for Euro engines.

I have used this vinyl paper with a home inkjet printer. So far it has worked well for my engine decals. They have held up to the heat from the valve cover and coolant tank. Can't go wrong for $8😜

I was going to print the sticker myself on a white foil and cover it with self-adhesive clear foil and/or (depending how it looks) spray some clear varnish on it - depending how it would look like. I was going to print, say, 5 or 10 of them, not to worry that they wear off...

I have the laser printer.

If you say this is a "no no" from oil etc. resistance point of view, then I would begin search of a printers who can do it for me on an oil resistant material.

You can certainly use sticker paper (best is mat, printing is worse usually on gloss) - but then I would definitely use clear foil on top or varnish or both as paper would catch stains easily. This is what I did with the Varta sticker you saw - this was paper + clear foil.

Any print shop should be able print on vinyl to create you the decals. Send them the PDF file. I have printed on gloss sticker paper, and these have held out very well.
I also had them printed at a local print shop on vinyl. i was charged less then a Euro.
