Possible to reply to old threads?
« on: June 25, 2019, 22:37:11 »
When doing a search for a topic, and I find the thread, it looks like they're all locked from responding.

Do threads get automatically locked after awhile?

I hate having to restart a new thread/post if the topic is already been discussed and I just had a follow-up question or contribution.

I think all older threads are locked after a certain amount of time. You could always copy and paste certain portions of a post if you are asking about those points specifically.

Okay thanks.

Most likely will just copy the link to the thread for reference.

As Dan mentioned copy and paste a section were you wish to comment on or ask a further question in order to open a new thread on the subject or you may refer to the thread by making a copy of the thread in question and pasting it into your thread.

No worries it is not unusual to have more threads on the same subject. On the other hand some of the older threads need to be deleted to maintain the site in good operation.

I can always reopen an old thread, by popular demand. Old threads are locked because the original posters frequently are no longer around, and only if the thread has not been posted in for over a year or so.

Send me the topic number from the URL and I can re-open.

Is that's what the Notify button is for?

But isn't the information still valid even if the poster isn't?  It seems more efficient to build on an existing technical technical thread rather than starting anew. That is the value of history, isn't it?

Is that's what the Notify button is for?

The Notify button ensures that you get an e-mail when the topic is posted in. If you want to open a thread the report to moderator button is more useful. However, that button might not appear on locked topics.

Ah, ok.  Was wondering what the notify meant.  Thought it was kind of a "flag" for inappropriate comment(s) or something.

That is what “report to moderator” is for...
