need help with lower side trim attachment clips
« on: October 09, 2019, 19:39:04 »
FINALLY, only 11 years since my 230SL was disassembled, I am getting it back together.  Pretty much down to those lower trim strips on the doors and front/rear quarter panels.

When I initially removed the trim, the attachment clips found were just the off-white plastic clips as shown in the picture.  Of course, most of them broke when removing.

I purchased some new replacements, 3 parts for each clip, but cannot figure how to use these with the trim.  The blue plastic pieces seem identical to the old off-white clips, but they don't seem to want to hold the trim in place by themselves.

Please review the picture.. I don't see how/where the metal portion of the clip is going to fit in the trim piece, or how the three pieces should be assembled.

Any guidance (including photos) would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Paul,
The blue pieces are also available in yellow and allow for a slightly thicker panel, I believe the alum door panels are a bit thicker.
The metal clip is locked in with the white button piece and installed horizontally only to prevent rails from sliding (horizontally).  (2 per rail typically)
I can post some pictures later.
Hope that helps

Thanks Dirk,
I am vaguely getting the idea, but pictures would be extremely helpful!

Peter,
I had a buch of these attached to my trim set when I bought it. I also bought the normal plastic kit and never considered using them as they appear to be to "strong of a spring" to push into the panel holes. I may reconsider.

Phil,
As mentioned above. (Mine are yellow and the trim is not mounted yet).

If I recall correctly the factory style clips will not work with some reproduction trim. The supplied metal spring clips need to be used. So depending on where the trim was sourced may determine what needs to be used.
