Pre-Oiling Engine
« on: July 07, 2019, 23:13:57 »
So my 1971 280SL has been in long term storage ... for 15-odd years. I have replaced all fluids and filters, flushed the fuel system, oiled the cylinders, turned the engine over by hand ... etc ... but prior to starting, I want to fully lubricate the engine. Yes, I can remove the spark plugs and crank the engine to full oil pressure but would rather run pressurized oil thru the system prior to imposing any level of load.

Where can I easily attach to the engine as an oil feed from a pressurized oil tank ?

Spin it with the starter and spark plugs removed. Without plugs and not running there will be no load on anything. You should be able to get full oil pressure in 10 - 15 seconds. Not much different than doing an oil change.

I would be more concerned about the fuel system. Stuck electric fuel pump, and varnish in the tank and lines can be a problem. Change the main fuel filter and check the screen in the intake of the electric fuel pump and gas tank.

Understand, but am concerned that there is absolutely no oil film remaining in the bearings. I will pull the valve cover and lubricate the cam/lifters.

Luckily it has never seen Ethanol ... and was stored with an infusion of StaBil ... so the purged fuel was actually in pretty good shape. The fuel pump works, but at about 50% flow.
