what carpet best matches 216 cognac leather?

(1/3) > >>

pj:
Hello everyone,
just looking for some fresh eyes and confirmation thoughts here. Our data card shows the interior was 216, although when we bought the car the seats were not leather. We plan to have them done in leather now. But I have no idea if the carpet was original when we bought the car. It was in pretty rough shape, so Dan tore out most of the carpet for us and we drove it with just mats for a few years. The photo here shows the carpet on the seatbacks and parcel shelf of our 230SL before it was rebuilt. All of this will be replaced with the new carpet kit, of course.

The issue is that the technical manual says carpet colour 6454 was matched with cognac leather. But GAHH and other websites tell me that 6454 is a dark brown. That sure doesn't look like dark brown on the seatbacks in the photo! My wife has a keen eye for colour and insists that GAHH's colour MB-3 is a better match for our new interior. For all the right reasons, I agree with her, even though it would not be the perfect match for the original.

Am I on the right track here? Please share your experience and wisdom with me.

This is an older pic
My code is 140 so MB Tex in Cognac with a 8008 Brown carpet and that appears to have been "factory"

However, it's now a cognac leather interior (216)  with a carpet of what i think is 8008 (may be 6454)

pj:
Hi James,
thanks for posting your photo. Is that before or after the conversion to 216?
Here's the image for GAHH's colour 503, which is what they offer to match the old 6454.

After. I got the car with the leather. And blue jaguar Wilton carpets!

I had these fitted by a specialist MB upholsterer after a couple of years as I hated the blue

That 503 is too brown for my colour, mine is more, err, cognac - it’s more caramel than brown. Interestingly, the tech manual has pics of this colour in the interiors section but is not clear on what colour it is

pj:
Presuming the computer screens do a good job of representing the actual colours, here are the carpet samples GAHH sent us. That's 503 on the left, which is listed as the equivalent to the brown 6454 that goes with 216, and MB-3 on the right, the lighter shade that my wife insists goes better with 216.
