Dutch 230 SL Pagode 1965 restoration project

Here are the first pictures of my new project, the restoration of a Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagode (Pagoda) from 1965.
It's imported from Texas, USA and I'm not sure yet but it seems it still has the original paint.
At least the engine is till original.
Unfortunately the paint has already been sanded and many parts have been removed from the car, I bought the car like this.
It is certain that I won't use the 30 years old tires any more.  ;D
But a nice surprise was that the soft top is in a good shape.

Yes there is some rust at the chassis and floor.
Tomorrow I will hunt for that.  ;D

A winter project?
It's probably on very wide tires but that first photo sure shows off a nice stance. I like it. It's got character. I am keen to see how you progress and even more so what the end result will be. I know I will have to be patient :)

Just had my top down yesterday and enjoyed what may very well be the last nice day of our Indian summer in NL.

Welcome, and good luck with the restoration. I sure hope it came with the grille chrome. And that the rust is really minor.  Veel succes, alle info en hulp zijn hier te vinden.

The color is 332 G, dark blue.

I inspected the bottom of the car and there were several suspicious spots but they appeared OK (only surface rust).
There seem to be four places with holes.
At both rears of the sills (the common place), a small one at the front of the left sill and a hole in the bottom behind the drivers seat. With these results I am reasonably satisfied, I can weld them myself.
But as a nice surprise I saw there is power steering!
That was not ordered new, as I saw at the papers.

I would suggest you open up every little hole you can find to see whats behind. I was giving my underside one last go through before I started my repaint and i notice one small pinprick hole behind the passenger side front tire. I started poking and soon found that about  4 inch section would have rusted through shortly had i not dug it out. My new hole also exposed plenty of surface rust on the jackpost in the rocker. Didnt take me elong to clean it out and coat with POR 15 to prevent a much bigger issue down the road. I'm almost tempted to cut the same section ot on the other side to check for rust in the rocker rail although it seams very solid.

You're right, I have planned to clean the bottom with dry ice blasting.
I don't like nasty surprises after the restoration.  ;D

To remove the exhaust pipes from the manifold was not easy, they were really stuck.
I used a bolt to press between the flanges and then they got loose.
The exhaust itself has had its best time.  ;D
Furthermore the rubber around the front window was not flexible anymore, it just snapped at several placed.
Without the rubber I discovered some hidden screws.
After all they were some useful hours.

Very difficult to tell from the photos - are the chrome exhaust tips in good condition? They appear to have the squared off ends (which is how they came from the factory). These are just about impossible to find. Hope you can salvage them!

The rubber of the air valve has once been better I guess.  ;D
Today I started with welding of a small piece of steel plate in the floor.

The floor is closed again, two small holes have been welded.
Immediately after grinding the bare metal has been put in a layer of zinc primer.
Continuing with removing all parts from the engine compartment.
