Mercedes Logo Presence on Tool Bag
« on: February 02, 2018, 10:59:58 »
Is there any pattern or rule regarding the Mercedes logo being or not being placed on the tool bag?

Our Tech Manual says it was there. But shows one of the tool sets without it.

I have gone through a lot of posts and copied a lot of pictures from fellow members showing tool sets said to be original and bags to be original. I do not see the logo on all of them. The only regularity I could spot was that the closer we go to 280SL the more pictures are there with logo. While on some of the 250SL examples logo is not there.

I am now at the stage of chasing the proper tool set (what I have now is the replacement set only). I see on e-bay that "complete and original" W113 tool sets cost a fortune and usually have very little to do with what a tool set for Pagoda should be. So this is a piece by piece search...

My 280SL came with a tool bag that had the logo ink stamped on the right side on the canvas. The motoring investments site shows how they made a reproduction without the logo. I suppose you could hire a seamstress or find an interior fitter to make one and have the logo silk screened. Order 5 or more fore the quantity discount and resell them. There is likely a market.

Pawel,
The search tool is your friend.
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=26577.0
You will find these very authentic with a few or a couple of extra tools, maybe the oil plug wrench and the fuse puller. The authentic bags can be spotted by their material.

Also, I've seen the tool bag with a without the Mercedes Star on original tool bags. So much so, that I don't know if you are correct about the late cars having the stamp consistently. In fact, on some bags the star is faded to the point that it makes me think that all had the star, some just faded away .....
Have fun !

Thank you for your kind replies!

Frank - I do not mean to make and resell anything!  :D :D
I just want to re-cereate a tool bag for my car. I found a vendor on e-bay who will make it blue for me. For licence reasons he is not stamping logo, which is fair. I can do the logo myself (as you say, silk screen for instance). I asked the question if indeed it was always present because I was not sure if the logo has to be there or not - as I have seen a lot of original tool sets without it.

Mark, the search tool is my friend indeed! I think I am a Master of Search! Finished 2AM the other day on the tool sets. I really try not to bother the fellow members before I do my homework. Certainly saw the post you provided the link to and I have the pictures from it saved as reference for search.

I am certainly not sure about logo being more frequent later - now even less then before. Thank you for your hint about those logos fading - you may be absolutely right there...

The replacement bag I bought from MB in 1970 has no logo, not even a faded one.

When I was looking at the bag today the closure snaps caught my eye.  These are all clearly marked on the inside with a brand name.  Has anyone ever mentioned these as a possible means of identifying authentic bags.  Zoom in on the attached.

Thank you for sharing!

Difficult to catch the logo on/off regularity...

Interesting catch on the snaps, wonder if MB suppliers were consistent there...

I bought my 1966 230SL new and have the tool kit that was delivered with the car.  It even has the wood handle screwdriver and, of course, the pliers with the proper markings,  Only thing missing from new is the fuse box and I suppose I used all the fuses at some time.  There is no Mercedes logo on the tool bag.  The snaps on the bag are exactly as the closeup shown in neelyrc's post.

Ralph,
that is a great idea. My 1968 280SL came with a bag that has the star and Mercedes lettering and the same snaps.
The bag in the 1964 230SL has no logo or lettering and the same snaps.

The inscription on the snaps reads DOT DURABLE. They were and are still made by the Scovill Company in Georgia:

Same snaps on mine as well and no other markings. Looks like these cars had a a bit of “foreign content” after all😄

Okay, you made me go look. Interesting twist. The tool kit and the spare tire (one snap) has the DOT - DURABLE for the set in the 250 SL. My 280 SL (1970, Sept 1969 build) has DURABLE, but not DOT for both the tool kit and the spare tire cover.
