Hello, new member here. Curious what is behind the name PUB PAGODA UNIVERSITY BLACKLICK — ? Is there a university by that name? Appears the events move around from VA to Ohio?

Wecome to the group JakeMN.

Good question.  PUB is “the” primary USA event of the group.  Historically it has been held in Blacklick in alternate years but this year it was held in Virginia for the first time.  For background, click on the “Search” button at the top of the page and type in “Pagoda University Blacklick” and read through some of the many threads on the subject.  This will be a good introduction to the group for you as a new member.

Again, welcome to the group.

Let me elaborate on this a little...

The predecessor of this forum (and of course the group which spun out of the forum) was a similar forum that was created by Rodd Masteller on the Yahoo! forum site. Yahoo provided a template for groups of people to form ad-hoc "chat groups" by way of forums, and Rodd, who has a 230SL thought it might be a good idea to attract like owners to share their knowledge.

This was maybe 1999 or 2000. There were a few members and pretty much everyone was a bit anonymous, not only in name but in location too. When some of us came out so to speak, and it was revealed that many of us were MBCA members, AND we were in this upper midwest area (Ohio/Michigan) of Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus. Well, Rodd (rwmastel) and Joe Alexander (JA17) were in Columbus, Pete Lesler (W113SL) in Cleveland and I in Detroit, so I suggested we drive to Findlay, Ohio and have a GTG (get together). Well, Rodd's car wasn't that drivable, so he suggested Columbus. That's when Joe Alexander offered to host at his home and shop in Blacklick, just E of Columbus. I missed the first meetup which was in 2002 I believe. There was a second one a year later in 2003, and almost every other year after that. 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, all in Blacklick. For some reason I think we may have skipped one year but I'm not certain. For 2017 an organizing committee was put together and the event moved to Tom Sargeant's Ramsay farm in Virginia. I believe that 2007 or 2009 was when someone coined the name PUB for Pagoda University Blacklick.

Hey Michael, I thought it was you who started the PUB monniker. I have fond memories of that first PUB in 2002. I think those beginnings are documented on the homepage. Tom, Rodd, Achim, Richard M., Doug K and I were the founding board members in attendance I believe. Anyways, 'the rest is history' and it's hard to believe this is already fifteen years ago.

Correct. It was before the 2007 event when Glenn Fiscus coined the moniker. At that time he used the forum name "glennard", now it is just "glenn".

Michael, great background information in your post thanks!

And a great Group of Gentleman that founded this fantastic Truly International Pagoda SL Group and keept it going all those years. They truly deserve our sincere  thanks!

I have a Question, how many of the long term Members have all the Pagoda World issues I.e. 1 to 22 ?

I joined in 2013 and my collection of those great PW stories consists of issue 10 to 22.

I wish I had the chance to read issues 1 to 9 Great stories in those issues i’m Sure also.

How many issues do people out there have in there collection?

Dieter,
I thought the board was close to a decision to reprint the earlier issues in packages (Issue 1- 6, 6-12, etc) for sale to full members.
What happened? Did it get kicked down the road again? 😢

I provided some technical detail on the "how to" to both Ray and JonnyB at PUB this year, so I think it is a work in progress. There seems to be some issues only available in print because someone didn't save the digital versions which were used to create the print. That's not a deal breaker just a speed bump.

Hi Alfred,

Yes it’s still on the back burner we will address it again at the January Board Meeting.

Hi Michael,

sounds great! Looking forward to the end results. With our available Indexes / Contents of all published Pagoda World Issues and Pagoda Notes a assembly of past issues (1 and up) will be a great reference to all that can obtain it. I think it will only be available to Full Members as far as I know. Anyway it will be worth its weight in Gold for it provides an easy link to stories, repairs made, tips for our cars etc.

I have a nice scanner and volunteer to assemble PDF files from hard copies if needed.

I wasn't at the 2002 PUB but was at 2003. I think this photo came from Michael Lara, "Sigman". Don't think he's still active, but he's still a member and was in Pagoda Style.

Good morning,

One small correction. I believe that the 2013 (50th anniversary) was also held in Virginia. That was my first and I vowed then to never miss one if I could possibly make it. Very fond memories of some really great people!

I am one of the lucky ones who has all issues. From Vol 1 #1 to the latest.
Also 2013 was not in Columbus, it was in VA. Some of us went to Germany for the 50th in 2013 .

Hi Tom,

I know this is what I mentioned to James. I have found memories of 2013 in Williamsburg Virginia. Bob Hyatt and his wife put on a great event. Meeting members on the Friday night then on Saturday we assembled our cars in the hotel parking lot for a show and tell amongst members that came from far and near. Joe Alexander and his dad helped me out with a stuck soft top that Saturday morning (they knew exactly what to do to unstuck the top and put it back into the storage compartment). Sunday our Pagoda group was welcomed into the car show that had a special day along with the Porsche celebrating our anniversary. It was a great event like all events if it is PUB, a gathering like the one in Williamsburg or anywhere when likeminded people meet.

You are one of the lucky ones if you have all issues of PW, I am missing 1 to 9, hopefully i get to read them some day. Ive got 10 to 22 and read everyone.

Cheers,

Dieter

Yes . 2013 was not held in Blacklick, for 2 reasons.
1-The 50th anniversary in Germany.
2- The Williamsburg 50th Celebration.
